President Report

Remember the sign on the old sandwich boards carried around in the movies "The end is nigh". Well that is certainly ringing true for my year as President of the Club. Changeover is here and it is time to pass on the baton.

This time of the year is usually set aside for reflection. I recently met with our Assistant Governor Ray Brand to review our outcomes for the year and I think we have achieved quite a lot during this year.

Without pre-empting the Directors Reports that appear in this Changeover Bulletin, our achievements for the year have included:

. Membership Development

. Hosting a YEP Student

. Hosting a GSE Team

. Successful local media campaign

. Interesting series of vocational and "international" visits

. Launching the Club's History on CD

. Hosting a variety of functions with the support of our surrounding Clubs

. Supporting a wide variety of community causes

. Continuing to uphold the Club's tradition as a friendly Club

We have also been well supported by a wide range of individuals and organisations outside our Club. The Albert & Logan News have enabled us to spread our Rotary message very well this year. The Logan Chamber of Commerce, the Logan Office of Economic Development and Shailer Park State High School have all provided opportunities for our Club to further it's presence in the wider community.

This year we are supporting a number of organisations with the disbursement of the funds raised throughout the year. Beneficiaries this year are:

· Australian School Achievers Program $3,000

· Polio Plus $1,000

· Diabetes Australia $500

· Shailer Park State High School $100

A further amount of $1,400 remains to be disbursed and, subject to satisfactory negotiations, the beneficiary will be announced early in the new Rotary year.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the support and participation of all Club members and, in most cases, their partners. Thank you to everyone for their support of the Club's ideals.

I wish Noel and his team all the best for the coming year.

Club Service Report

2002 - the year of our Club's celebration of twenty one years of service and fellowship.

The collection and collating of the Club's activities over twenty one years was not an easy task - however the input of many persons and the enthusiasm of all who attended and participated in the Club's special night is a salute to the esteem the Club is held throughout the community and the Rotary organization. In particular I thank Noel Ambler, Melissa & Evan, Susan Dennings, Sarah Ware and Sue Roseby. And a special thanks to MC David Cocker. I believe the club is again showing the way by producing the CD of the Club history.

Throughout the year, the Club's membership has remained fairly static, however several prospective new members are in the process and when inducted will enhance Club numbers.

The various activities and functions of the Club Service is reliant upon dedication and interest of committee members to this end I thank Sergeant at Arms, David Cocker, for his enthusiasm to promote lively sessions, Club Registrar Peter Crouch, Bulletin Editor Lorraine Howson and our stalwart Treasurer Barry Swain who somehow is able to forecast dinner numbers by means of a truly secret formula.

The year has been truly rewarding and memorable and again I thank one and all. I wish incoming President Noel a happy rewarding year - the year of the Rotary International Convention in Brisbane.

Vocational Service Report

As another successful Rotary year draws to a close it is time to reflect on the Vocational Service contribution towards that success.

Undoubtedly the highlight was the Pride of Workmanship Awards held in October. There were seven (7) Awards presented on the night to extremely worthy recipients from Logan - Beaudesert Health Service District and the Queensland Fire & Rescue Authority. A great night for the club.

Two enjoyable "Vocational Nights" were also held. The first one was a joint visit with Capalaba Club for a BBQ and tour of the Beenleigh Rum Distillery - need I say more.

Our second visit was a partners night to the weather bureau at the airport - informative and interesting to watch the release and tracking of the weather balloon.

The reintroduction of "What's new in my Business/Job Talks" has also been well received.

A very sincere thankyou to those members who contributed to the success of this Vocational Service year and in particular David Gardner, Jim Nolan and Darryl Hood.

Yours in Rotary,

Graeme Bosanquet

International Service Report

Rotary provides fellowship while also providing various means of servicing the world community and this is where International Service shines. Here is a summary of the International activities for the year.

With a assistance of my committee member Ian West, President David and Jim Nolan as our Exchange Student Counsellor we achieved a number of goals and highlights this year. These were:

The arrival of our inbound Youth Exchange student Caitlin Baranko from Red Lodge Montana in January.

Primary host Club to the Group Study Exchange team from 1050 England. A hugely successful event due to the fellowship the group generated within the Club; the contacts we made within the community via their vocational days (I believe this played an important part in Roz McCoy joining the Club); and the interaction such an exchange created across the District.

The acceptance of Anna Kleinschmidt as our outbound Youth Exchange student to Switzerland in January 2003.

The celebration of Rotary's birthday, World Understanding Day, at the German Club with John from the German Chamber of Commence and Industry.

Continuing support for the Donations-in-Kind project under the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) by:

Attending rostered days at the DIK facility

Collecting stamps

Collecting items from locations such as the Logan Hospital.

Supporting a RAWCS project. The Club's donation of $100 will enable a young person to attend school for a year in the Pudu area of Malaysia.

Continued to recognise the internationality of Rotary through our International toasts each week with some of the memorable historic events we encountered being: discovering gold in the Yukon; the silencing of the guillotine; the first human heart transplant; crossing the English Channel in a balloon; the development of the first electronic computer in 1890; and the patenting of the zipper.

I wish Darryl Hood all the best as he again takes on the International Directorship.

Congratulations David on your year and good luck Noel.

QLD CANCER

Not a success for the amount of time and resources used. $1,051.70 was collected with the help of 12 collectors who tuned up on a very wet Sunday morning.

The collectors where set off in pairs with a Rotarian as the driver.

Three Rotarians and one husband collected outside the Spar Supermarket on Bryants Road.

Difficulties:

Obtaining collectors, Qld Cancer Fund was very limited in its ability to supply collectors.

I would suggest that if it is done again, then as a Club we should be looking at obtaining our own collectors. From the discussions that I had with other coordinators they use the same collectors or have developed a pool to drawn on that they have been working on over a number of years. It appears that about 20 - 25 collects is an ideal number to fully service the area.

Suggestion:

Unless a better way to obtain the collectors is found, I feel that it is beyond our clubs resources and our participation should be reviewed.

CHRISTMAS CAKES AND PUDDINGS:

Good return for resources used. $421.00 was raised.

Suggestion:

Encourage each member to order and then on sell.

The Christmas Cakes appear to sell faster the puddings.

The club needs to have the order in by mid-October so that delivery is November. This gives good lead up time for members to sell.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

Six club members cleaned up Alexandra Clark Park. Other than the odd car tyre the park in general was pretty clean.

BOWELSCAN

A new approach was tried this year of selling the kits though local Chemist shops. The project was advertised by a letter box drop and The Logan and Albert News assisted with free advertising. 160 kits where sold. A break-even situation was achieved with the support of Springwood Subway sponsorship. I believe it was a success, but improvements could be made.

Suggestions:

Salmart was used for a letterbox drop; this needs to be reassessed.

Greater assistance from the local media needs to be sort.

A roster established for each club member to collect kits from the Chemist Shops and deliver to S & N.
