President's Report 1982/83

Fellow Rotarians,

This year has seen a growth in unity and fellowship among the members. A very successful progressive dinner held in the early stage of the year strengthened the bonds of fellowship among the members, and contributed greatly to the unity of our still very young club.

Although there has been a loss of eight members during the year, due to business pressures and company transfers, it has been my pleasure and privilege to induct three new members. I believe that we should strive to implement the 3/1 plan in building our membership of responsible businessmen in the area.

Two major fund-raising projects have emerged this year, namely, Country & Western Barbeque and Cash-a-Can scheme. These will provide a good base for future fund raising. We have also successfully raised our $10 per member for the Australian Rotary Medical Foundation whose first major research project is the Cot Death Syndrome.

The club is in a predominantly youthful population area, and it is appropriate that our activities are centred on youth. We have had two young men attend the RYLA camps during the year. Our first nominee for a Rotary Exchange student has gained initial acceptance, and the club is looking forward to being host to its first incoming exchange student later this year. Members have again participated in the Work Experience scheme, offering work experience to students at local high schools. We were fortunate during the year to be part of a joint meeting with Beenleigh and Logan clubs where we were addressed by the visiting Group student Exchange team from Illinois, USA.

Our Rotary park in Adelong Street, Shailer Park is proving a popular amenity with the children in the area, and the facilities have been improved and extended during this year.

In addition to those donations mentioned in the Community Service Director's report, approximately $800 was donated to the Bush Fire Relief Appeal from club funds, members' donations and collection boxes at members' business premises.

Due to resignations, only two of the elected Directors remained for the full term, and I express my sincere thanks to those Directors who took on these directorships throughout the year. I would like to express my appreciation to my Board of Directors for their support and efforts during my year as President.

The resignation of the Treasurer during the year was a cause for concern to all members, and the subsequent audit of the club's accounts necessitated further investigations, which are continuing.

I would like to give special thanks to my Rotaryanne, Lynne, for all the help she has given me over the last twelve months. I would like, also, to express my appreciation to the Rotaryannes for their efforts and support during the year, with particular reference to the progressive dinner and country and western nights.

I would like to welcome Dave Roseby as our new President for 1983-84, and his Rotaryanne, Sue. I offer him my full support and wish him every success for the coming year.

In conclusion, I thank all the members of the Rotary Club of Loganholme for the support they have given me over the past twelve months.

Yours in Rotary,

Peter Chinnery

Club Service Report

On this our third changeover we can only expect to achieve greater heights of fellowship and service through all avenues of Rotary. Although during the past year there has been a loss to the club of seven members, due to varying reasons, it is a pleasure that we look forward to the addition to the club of at least three new members. These new members can only serve to aid the club in its service to the worldwide community.

The attendance average at 74% of members over the past twelve months is very good for a service organisation, however I am sure it will be improved during the coming year as we find ourselves more involved in the intricate workings of Rotary as a worldwide organisation.

I wish to thank a number of specific members and Annes for their support and dedication to their respective jobs, as no club can function without its individual members. Chris Monahan, as our registrar; John Axelson and Darryl Hood, as Sergeant and Corporal respectively; Barry and his worthy assistant Joy for the writing of the Bulletin. Kel and staff for their assistance with the production of the same; also to Barry's understudy Ray.

I hereby end my term as Club Service Director and to wish the incoming Director Barry all the support I have received during the past year.

Vocational Service Report 1982-83

An Employee Night was organised where members invited their employees to the meeting and a speaker from the Department of Industrial Relations gave a very interesting talk on 'Safety in the Workplace'.

The students of Shailer Park High School went on a tour of the Mt. Cotton CSIRO experimental farm and the Griffith University. These tours were sponsored by the Club.

A tour of the XXXX Brewery was organised in November and was a very interesting and informative night. This was followed by fellowship and a few drinks of course.

A 'Work Experience' talk by Mr Peter Bubbers of the Shailer Park High School was held and some of our members volunteered their workplace for the scheme.

During May a tour of Ray Carter's Clothing Factory was organised. This was also a Ladies Night and was followed by dinner at the Cricketers Club.

Community Service Report 1982/83

A number of fund raising avenues were employed this year by the Club. The largest money earners were the two ho-down nights held at the Springlands Barn. These were judged by all to be successful and future such nights should prove even more profitable as our expertise increases. The grog raffles while profitable will have to be looked at as many members reported difficulties in selling tickets in the second and third series of tickets within a short time span. We have finally been able to launch the cash-a-can scrap aluminium scheme. This has been greatly delayed due to the depressed state of the aluminum market. It should prove to be a steady money earner in the future.

The club was able to send away two RYLA nominees this year, and as they reported to the club, it was of great benefit to them. The club has also nominated a student to become a Rotary Exchange student.

Further development in the park has been slow but negotiations are under way to secure some topsoil. This should greatly improve it.

This year donations were made towards SES, local schools and Blue Nurses. The club once again provided some collectors for the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, as it also did to help at a couple of local school fetes.

International Service Report 1982/83

During the year we have continued to build International Service within our club. Several of our members have traveled overseas and have visited clubs in the countries in which they have journeyed. Unfortunately, we have not been able to welcome a visiting Rotarian from overseas during the last twelve months. However, in November we did have a letter from the Rotary Club of Oldbury, an area outside Birmingham in the Midlands of England, telling us that they had toasted us at one of their recent meetings. We replied, thanking them for their gesture and telling them a little of our club and district.

In March we were involved with the Group Study Exchange Team, which was visiting here from Illinois. This culminated in a combined meeting with Beenleigh and Logan Clubs, a Ladies Night, when the members of the team were our guests of honor. The highlight of the evening was the extremely well presented series of talks illustrated with slides, which was given by the team.

Perhaps the biggest step forward in this field for the year has been our nomination of Janelle Munns as a Rotary Exchange Student. Janelle who has visited the Club as a guest speaker impressed us with her potential as a young ambassadress. We await the results of her interviews to learn whether she has been accepted by the District Committee. Such sponsorship, of course, commits us to hosting an Exchange Student in return and it is gratifying to know that members have undertaken this commitment and more than a sufficient number of Rotarians and their wives have undertaken to act as host parents for the year. It will be the responsibility of a future Board and International Service Committee to carry through this program but these beginnings augur well for this aspect of our Club's service.

Rotaryannes Report 1982-83

The Rotaryannes have met on a regular basis and have been a lively and friendly group. We have been pleased to welcome three new Rotaryannes during the year.

I appreciate the support of the Rotaryannes and their willing assistance at all times, and feel sure this will be maintained in the future. I am confident of more enjoyable functions under Sue's leadership, and wish her well in this next year.
