Rotary International President: William Skelton
District Governor: Dave Mayo President: Dave Roseby Theme: Share Rotary - Serve People Office Bearers 1983-84 President Dave Roseby Club Service International Service Community Service Vocational Service President Elect 1984/85 Leo Desmond
President's Report 1982-83 Fellow Rotarians The theme for Rotary International for year 1983/84 has been 'SHARE ROTARY - SERVE PEOPLE" The Rotary Club of Loganholme has served this theme with distinction, in the following ways: 1. Increased Club membership by a total of 16% In respect of the second part of the theme "SERVE PEOPLE" members of the Club participated in the annual Red Shield appeal in conjunction with students of Shailer Park High School. A significant sum of money was collected from residents in the suburbs of Shailer Park, Kimberley Park, Tanah Merah, and Loganholme. The success of this appeal was the result of the efforts of past member Warren McLaughlin, and his wife Ann, who made their home available as a collection base, and Warren who acted as appeal co-ordinator. I wish to express my sincere appreciation to both Warren and Ann for their effort in the success of the appeal. The Club as a basic objective, made an endeavour to investigate ways and means of establishing a Rotaract Club within the Logan City - Beenleigh area. To this end the Club sponsored a joint meeting of Rotarians, Rotaryannes and guests of Beenleigh, and Logan Clubs - however, this Club is not able to pursue this matter due to business commitments of members at present, but at some future date, and dependant upon the availability of members at that time, it is hoped that, the establishment of a Rotaract Club will again be investigated. There have been many other aspects of Club activities throughout the past year when members and their Rotaryannes have participated in various Club activities. I particularly wish to thank all fellow Club members and Rotaryannes for their support and effort, especially in the co-hosting of District Conference at Caloundra, which was an outstanding success and more recently at the most successful Hoe-down. As far as I am personally concerned, the outstanding highlight of the year was being awarded a Presidential Citation. This citation is a direct reflection of dedication of the collective members of this Club without whose support and effort, the award of the citation would not have been possible. I also wish to express my appreciation to members of the Board for their support and dedication to the ideals of Rotary throughout the year. The business of the Board for the year 1983/84 is now complete, and it is with pleasure that I hand over to incoming President Leo and his Board of Directors, and wish each and every one a most successful year in Rotary for 1984/85. David Roseby Club Service Report 1983-84 The past year has been an active one, particularly as far as membership is concerned. We have seen eight new members inducted since our last changeover, which has added great strength to our club. Unfortunately this has been offset to some extent by a number of resignations during the year - five of our old members have resigned for various reasons and our membership now stands at 21. Similar growth through the coming year but without the same pattern of resignations will see the club in a strong position. Attendance over the year has fluctuated and lack of make-ups has often affected our position on the District Governor's attendance list. My thanks to Don Dellit for his efforts during the year as Attendance Chairman and to John Elms who, during Don's leave-of-absence, filled in for him so ably. The Club Bulletin has continued to record the weekly events of the Club. Early in the year, the format of this went onto computer, which made its production more stream lined. Unfortunately we have not yet found a computer which can actually write up the content and for the first half of the year this task fell to Ray Carter until pressure of business forced him to vacate the post of Bulletin Editor. My thanks to Bob Moses who has helped me produce the Intermesh since then, to Ray for his earlier efforts in writing and producing the bulletin each week, and to Kel Barnes and his students who have taken over production in the last months. Other dual roles during the year have been those of Programme Director, filled originally by Peter Chinnery, but taken over later by Ian West and Sergeant-at-Arms John Pollard who stepped into the breach following the resignation of Warren McLaughlin. My thanks to all for making our weekly meetings enjoyable and informative. Functions during the year have included a Progressive Dinner for members and friends and a joint meeting at the Tavern with Beenleigh and Logan Clubs, the District Rotaract Committee and a number of Rotaractors. We have also been pleased to welcome our Rotaryannes to our Ladies Nights. All were enjoyable evenings of good fellowship. In concluding my report as Club Service Director, I wish incoming Director bob great success during the coming year - I am sure he will receive the same support, which has been given to me during the past year. Barry Swain Community Service Report 1983-84 Owing to the relatively small number of members in our club during the early part of the year, our committee has unfortunately been unable to reach the heights of service, which we would have liked. However we have done our utmost with the available manpower. Our members have given their time and effort to helping the Shailer Park and Loganholme Primary Schools and John Paul College with their fund-raising activities. The Uniting Church's "Arana Heights" project and the Salvation Army's "Red Shield Appeal" also benefited from assistance given. Most of our own fund raising ventures including cash-a-can, the sale of commemorative port at the District Conference and our country and western Ho-down have been highly successful, with only our efforts at Murrarie and Jensons Tree Farm being a disappointment to the club. At this stage of the year we have raised a considerable amount of money to be distributed to worthwhile local organisations, which need our continued help. I would like to thank my committee and all those members who helped out throughout the year, and wish my successor as much support as I have received during my term as Community Service Director. Bob Moses The major feature of this year's International Service calendar has been the Club's first every foray into the Rotary Youth Exchange Programme, the object of which is to further international goodwill and understanding by enabling students to study at first hand some of the problems and accomplishments of people in lands other than their own. As the word "exchange" suggests, the Club is involved in both sponsoring a young local person in travelling overseas and in acting as a host to an incoming student. The Club's sponsored student is Janelle Munns, aged seventeen of Daisy Hill who has been placed with the Rotary Club of Naestved in Denmark for a period of about twelve months. Prior to her departure on the 19th January, 1984 the Club presented to Janelle amongst other things, a banner bearing greetings in the Danish language for presentation to her host club overseas. Time certainly flies and from dispatches received it seems Janelle has made a very good fist indeed of conversing with her hosts in their native Danish. She has also been fortunate enough to travel widely through Europe, which is a marvelous experience for one so young. The Club's incoming student who arrived on the 20th January, 1984 is Beth Rice. Beth is aged sixteen and hails from Lancaster, Ohio, USA. She is attending John Paul College at Daisy Hill and during her twelve months with us will be staying with four Club Rotarians, Rotaryannes and their families. Beth has settled in well to life in Australia and recently went on a tour seeing points of interest within the State. I fear she's seen more of Queensland than our own Club members! The Club has been fortunate indeed to have students of the calibre of Janelle and Beth involved in the programme. My thanks go to our President, Dave Roseby in his capacity as Counselor and to his good wife Sue, to host parents or host parents to be, Peter and Lynne Chinnery, Ray and Helen Carter, Darryl and Carol Hood and Graeme and Lyn Bosanquet and to all Club members for their support during this Rotary year. Chris Monahan Rotaryannes Report 1983-84 The fellowship of the Rotaryannes and their willing support and assistance throughout the past year has been a most enjoyable experience, particularly at the Jensen Tree Farm Fair, Caloundra Conference and the Hoe-down. During the year we have welcomed seven new Rotaryannes to our group. We have enjoyed numerous guest speakers, one of note being Donna Meilkejohn, and we attended a joint function with Beenleigh Rotaryannes, when an address was given on Drug Awareness. The Rotaryannes have supported the Woodridge Women's Refuge through a cash donation, also children's gifts and a food hamper were donated by club members for distribution at the refuge. I wish to thank each Rotaryanne for her fellowship during the year and I am sure that support and fellowship will continue in the future. I welcome Jane and wish her a happy and successful year.
