President's Report 1988-89

Well the year was certainly a very busy time for me. Since being elected I have sold my business and home, and bought land, designed a house and built it as an owner builder, only just moving in this month.

As President I would not have been able to do this and do what was expected of me without the outstanding support of a loyal Board of Directors and their committees. I thank them for an outstanding job as the reports in this Bulletin only briefly explains the work that was done.

It would not be fair of me to single out any one person as I feel that every member has contributed his best to the Club as the results show.

It is sad when we lose members as we also lose contact with a friend and there is no way we can overcome this as I have learned. We must accept the fact that business pressures, change of address, or transfer etc, are always there, then there is the satisfying pleasure of inducting new members which in turn adds new life and friendship. I thank the members who introduced, Martin, Richard, Bryan, Peter and George and their Annes.

They say it is lonely at the top, but I have learned that this was not so because everybody shared a warm fellowship and I have benefited by having this contact with each person individually.

I thank Maree and the Rotaryannes for the support they give to us without questions and for the behind the scene's hard work they do. Without their support we could not achieve what we do.

In closing I welcome President Gil and his board and know that they will do their best. We will endeavour to put Loganholme Rotary Club Inc. at the top.

I thank you all most sincerely for a rewarding year.

Community Service Committee Report 1988-89

Rotarians appointed to this committee at the commencement of the Rotary year were Graeme Bosanquet, Charlie Parsons, Peter Schell, Ian West, Brian Mulherin. Sadly, Peter resigned from the Club, but we are fortunate in having as replacements new Rotarians Bryan Roseby and Peter Smit.

Our first Club assembly for the year took the form of a brainstorming session conducted by Peter Schell, and from this came ideas for all committees. For community service came the suggestion of the Community Help Project for the Aged and Handicapped, which has been the project on which every member of the Club has worked, most at least twice, and many three times. It would be pointless to pretend the project has met with universal approval within the Club, and obviously its future lies with the incoming committee and board. However, it has led to every Rotarian personally expending some physical effort for the benefit of someone less fortunate than himself, it has gone a little way to achieving Past President Ian West's long held wish for us to be a "doing" as well as a "dinner" Club, and the people in the best position to judge, the Blue Nurses, state it has been very worthwhile.

The Club was delighted to act as "Honest Broker" between the Queensland Society for Crippled Children and Monitor Money Foundation, in the provision of a heated Spa for little Melissa Jones of Loganholme, a sufferer from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. We were asked for help, lacked the necessary $4,000 plus, but through the Underwood office of Monitor Money, opened discussions with their Foundation, who provided the entire amount to the Society for a demountable unit, more expensive than the static Spa, but which can be provided to another child when Melissa hopefully improves. The committee records its thanks to all concerned, particularly Mr Vern Gowdie of Monitor Money Underwood office, Mr Shane O'Reilly of Monitor Money Foundation, and Dr Paul Hopkins, a visiting "Honorary" to the Montrose Home for Crippled Children who, at our request, carried out the assessment of Melissa's condition for the Foundation.

Other projects during the year included the Rural Urban Liaison program of our district, when we had more members willing to accommodate visitors than were required, participation in the Salvation Army Red Shield annual door knock appeal, a special "one-off" donation to the Salvation Army to lift them "over a hurdle", our agreeing to accept an incoming Exchange Student "ahead of time" to help the District Governor "over a hurdle", the provision of a team to help man the phones in the QTQ9 Telethon for Life Education Centre, a donation to the Australian Health Research Fun, and some ex gratia legal advice was made to certain people in need of help, but lacking the financial resources, by courtesy of those in the club qualified to do this, for which the committee thanks them.

As this report is being written, the committee is considering various other approaches, and anticipates assisting the Woodridge State High School with its implementation of the Rotary sponsored Queensland Intergrade Project "QIP", successfully tried in New South Wales as the Rotary sponsored Peer Support Program, and also assisting the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

For the incoming committee, we have a commitment to assist in the Blue Nurses Annual door knock appeal during the week on August 19 to 26, and for that project, and for all other activities in the coming year, the outgoing committee offers very best wishes for success.

International Service Report 1988-89

This year International Service has been active in various areas of activity including Rotary Foundation Scholarship, CRA Science Summer School, and International Exchange Student Programme.

In September last year we were able to send out a Rotary Foundation Scholar, Mr Peter Last to Vancouver to study in the field of Intensive Care Nursing for twelve months. Our Board this year has interviewed Mr Stephen Brown, a subject master in Geography at Shailer Park High School for Scholarship consideration. A decision has been made to nominate Stephen to District Level. Activities of this nature are seen as important for the improvement of knowledge, skills and technology of our own people as well as the improvement of international relations and information transfer.

We were privileged to be able to welcome our International Exchange Student, Chikako Inoue into our midst, from Japan. Chikako is currently staying with the Robert's family and attending John Paul College. A special thank-you to those families who have offered their services as hosts at such short notice on this occasion.

Participation was also possible in the Group Study Exchange again this year when we were able to host two of a six man exchange team from the USA in our Club and participate in their visits and information exchange in our area of the district in conjunction with other surrounding Clubs. At the end of 1988 we were able to propose a young engineer from the Mater Hospital in the return exchange visit however he was unsuccessful at District Level.

Our Club has also put forward Noel Moseley as a nomination to District to attend the CRA National Science Summer School in Canberra. Noel is a year 11 student at John Paul College and we believe extremely well qualified to participate in this event in early 1990.

Various other activities were held such as a meeting in China Town in Fortitude Valley and five minute spots by members on different countries as a means of improving international understanding.

Thank you for each members support in the International Service arena this year and we hope that all have benefited in some way from participation in these activities to forward their International understanding.

Club Service Report 1988-89

When we celebrated our last change over in June 1988, we had an effective membership of 25 fellows with one honorary member. Of these, two resigned before the current year was underway and four more have resigned during the last twelve months. Those lost to the Club were Roger Knight, Bill McGuire, Neil Macleod, Vic Pommering, Peter Schell and Steven Smith.

This loss has been partially offset by the induction of four new members during the year. The Club has been pleased to welcome Martin Hansen, Richard Purser, Bryan Roseby and Peter Smit to its ranks. Membership currently stands at 24 - 23 active members and Huan Fraser whom the Board was pleased to elect as honorary membership again at the beginning of the current year.

Activities during the year included: -
1 Club Breakfast Meeting
1 International Night in Chinatown
1 Vocational Meeting
2 Hostings of a visiting club - Wishart and Logan
1 Return visit to Logan Club on the eve of the Melbourne Cup
1 Joint Ladies Night with five adjoining Clubs, when the members of the visiting Group Study Exchange team from Montana were our guests
7 Ladies nights which included Change-over, our Christmas meeting and the international night previously mentioned.

We were visited by 52 visiting Rotarians during the year from Clubs as close as Beenleigh and Logan and as far removed as Guam.

The Club was represented by six fellows and their Rotaryannes at the District conference at Caloundra in March and there was a full compliment at the District Assembly last month.

Social activities, other than ladies night have been restricted during the year. A champagne breakfast organised early in November in Daisy Hill State Forest was so poorly attended that we were convinced that social activities outside of normal meetings were not popular. Our only other social gathering was a birthday barbeque for Chikako, which again was poorly attended.

This year has again been a period of fluctuating attendance and corresponding mediocre attendance percentages within the District listings. With more than two hundred individual absences during the year we were only able to record approximately fifty make-ups to compensate. It is hoped that within the coming year we will be able to improve on this.

Special thanks must be given to Dave Roseby and Bob Cramp who have carried out their duties as registrars so conscientiously each week and to Darryl Hood who, as Sergeant, has ensured that meetings have run smoothly and to programme and who has injected humour into the weekly proceedings with his fine sessions. My thanks also to Chris Monahan who has managed to decipher my draft each week and produce our bulletin. The unfailing way in which this has been printed and delivered each week has made my job as Bulletin Editor so much easier.

Finally, my thanks to the Club Service Committee which has kept the Club running so smoothly during the year and my best wishes to the incoming Club Service Director and his committee for a successful tenure during 1989-90. May your year be a full and rewarding one.

Rotaryannes Report 1988-89

I would like to thank those ladies whom helped and backed me throughout the year with any event that was on from our first get together, the Steamboat night, our relaxed meetings etc. We helped two very needy families at Christmas with food hampers. Had an excellent Easter Raffle. Held our first daytime get together meeting. And by the end of the year raised enough money to be able to give a donation to the Blue Nurses to assist in the purchase of aids for patients.

I have enjoyed the year and wish Gil in his President's position and Jacki to have a great year. Thank you all.

Maree Bennett
Vocational Service Report 1988-89

The year commenced with Steven Smith as Director and following his resignation in April I took over as Director.

It has been a quiet year in vocation this year as some of our regular items slipped. By the way, mock job interviews seem to be a thing of the past. These we used to have at both Shailer Park and John Paul College High Schools, perhaps we could reinstate these next year.

Discussions have been had with John Perry re a Business Incubation Programme. At present it is in limbo due to a hiccup at the Logan Hi Tech. The programme should definitely be followed up by the incoming committee.

The only outing this year was to the Neta Tire Retreads Factory, which enlightened the twelve people who attended. We then had a meal at the Breakfast Creek Hotel and an enjoyable night was had by all.

May I wish the incoming director and his committee all the best.

Yours in Rotary
Peter Chinnery
