Rotary International President: Hugh Archer
District Governor: Bill Hamilton President: Gil Lunn Theme: Enjoy Rotary! Office Bearers 1989-90 President Gil Lunn Club Service Vocational Service International Service Community Service R.I. Presidents Hugh Archer's theme for this year was 'ENJOY ROTARY". When the year commenced I was apprehensive about what lay ahead. At year's end, when I look back, I think I did enjoy the year that I was President of the Rotary Club of Loganholme. We certainly had a varied year. The club was active in all four avenues of service. Our activities involved all members of the Club and their Annes, which made for great fellowship and a lot of fun. Of course it wasn't easy going all the way. There were times things didn't appear to be running smoothly at all and this was reflected in some of the resignations that we had. I recall one particular night of soul searching and airing of dirty linen when a lot of concerns were expressed. I believe from that time on the members got together and the Club functioned as everyone expected it should. That cohesion resulted in a very successful year, which we should all be proud of. The most outstanding project conducted during this year was, of course, BOWELSCAN. Apart from being a very worthwhile and successful community service project, I felt that we all gained something that we joined ROTARY for - the satisfaction of "Service Above Self". BOWELSCAN also raised considerable funds, which we are pleased to donate to cancer research and to the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. To list all of the projects and programmes that we were involved in would take up quite a lot of space so I will leave that to the Directors to report on. However, I must mention a few significant activities. We were involved in Youth exchange and the GSE visit. My thanks to the host parents for accommodating Chikako while she was with us for the year and to those families who looked after Abhay. Our vocational visits were both enjoyable and educational. Who could forget Steve Brown, our Foundation Scholar nominee, speaking at the District Conference? Our "bread and butter" project - Bus Shelters - continued, with the Logan TAFE becoming involved in their construction. We enjoyed our inter-Club visits. Our nominee for the CRA National Science Summer School, Noel Mosely had a great time in Canberra. The list goes on. During the year we made cash donations to District 963 Flood Relief Fund ($500). The Rotary Club of Newcastle ($250) for earthquake relief and to the Rotary Club of Apia ($250) for cyclone relief. A couple of weeks ago I was very pleased to present on behalf of the Club, a cheque for $5000 to Mr Ray Novely who is handicapped and permanently confined to a wheelchair. Ray is a public servant and had no means of travel other than taxis. He has now purchased a van and had it modified to accommodate his chair. His friends drive it for him and he now has the freedom to get about whenever he wishes. I thank Dave Roseby and Mike Roberts for bringing this matter to the Clubs attention and for approaching Monitor Money Foundation who provided the money. We were pleased to welcome to our Club Tony and Anne McMahon and Dan and Jannette Haddon during the year and also the other appointees - SGT Bob, Registrar Randal, Bulletin Editors Barry and Dave and Program Director Noel. Four of our members served on District committees this year. They are Peter Chinnery, Barry Swain, Dave Roseby and Ian West - thanks fellows. To the members of Loganholme Rotary Club, thank you for making my year a year in which I did "ENJOY ROTARY". It would be remiss of me not to thank Jacki and all the Rotaryannes who have helped us throughout the year, especially during Bowelscan. Thanks ladies for your support and company. In closing, I wish Barry and his Board a very successful year. With a Club like ours, I am sure that the year ahead will also be one to remember. Yours in Rotary, The Rotary Year 1989-1990 to date has seen a decline in the number of club members, however, a recent induction and the pleasure we have tonight of formally welcoming two new members in Les McGavin and Doug Miles will result in there being only a very slight decline in this respect. We must however be every vigilant in relation to club numbers and it was a matter of some regret that a small Business evening targeted at local business proprietors was not able to proceed because of unavailability of the proposed guest-speaker. It is to be hoped that the function can be organised and held during the coming Rotary year, as it should prove to be a most worthwhile exercise. There is a great spirit within the Club as exemplified by the outstanding success of the Bowelscan programme, which will be dealt with elsewhere in this Bulletin, and this bodes well for the continued wellbeing of the club. Success breeds success. I thank all members of the Club for their support of the Club activities throughout the year and in particular the members of the Club Service Committee who have contributed a great deal towards the orderly running of the Club's business. I thank Brian Mulherin for his able and conscientious performance as Secretary, Mike Roberts for his capable performance of the demanding and most thankless job of Treasurer, the inimitable Randal Dennings for his fine work as Registrar, Noel Ambler for arranging such varied and interesting guest speakers, Bob Cramp for his cheery efforts as Sergeant at Arms and Barry Swain and his deputy Dave Roseby who put together a consistently excellent Bulletin. I congratulate President Gil on a job well done and express my special thanks to the Rotaryannes for their support and attendance at ladies' night, special events and vocational service visits. I wish the incoming Club Service Director Ray Carter and his Committee the very best for the coming year. Chris Monahan This year saw the Club participate in a number of Vocational Service Activities. A Vocational Excellence Award, the first for our Club was awarded and presented to Amelia Belbin from "The Reporter" in recognition of her outstanding journalistic achievements, which earned her a WALKELY Award. Although a little slow to get moving, Job Talks have been reintroduced with members being urged to speak on something in their line of business. Three enjoyable Vocational Nights have been organised during this Rotary Year. The first was a visit to Henderson Trout, organised by Randal Dennings. Thoroughly enjoyable information and an insight into how the other half live. Ian West organised our second night, a visit to the newly finished Logan TAFE. Another top night made all the more enjoyable by being accompanied by our Rotaryannes. Our third and final outing to the Department of Geographic Information, courtesy of Mike Roberts, saw members and their Annes turn up in force to enjoy a professionally run evening. There is no doubt that the inclusion of wives has added to these evenings and it is hoped their involvement in future Vocational Nights will continue. My thanks go to all who participated and contributed to Vocational Service this year and in particular to Randal, Ian and Mike for their unqualified support. Best wishes to the incoming Director and his Committee for continued success in 1990/91. Graeme Bosanquet
This year we have experienced a very active and enjoyable term of office in the field of International Service. We began the year promoting club member awareness of the history, purpose, operation and achievements of the various avenues of International Service. To enhance the above criteria, my thanks goes to Randal Dennings for his research and presentation of the international toast each week to another club around the world which would have featured in a topical news item. In March we sadly saw the department of our Youth Exchange Student Chikako Inoue back to Japan after a very enjoyable twelve months in our homes. Our warm thanks must go to the host parents for Chikako, Martin and Sheryl Hansen, Michael and Fay Roberts, Gil and Jacki Lunn and Randal and Sue Dennings. We must also extend our appreciation for the acceptance and education provided free of charge by John Paul College for the period of time that Chikako was with us. Our club was once again honoured by having the successful candidate in District 963 for the Rotary Foundation Graduate Scholarship of 1990-1991, in Stephen Brown. Stephen heads for the University of London in September to spend twelve months expanding his studies into the teaching field of Geography. Noel Mosely was our club candidate for the CRA International Science Summer School in Canberra in January this year. He achieved great recognition during the two weeks and has been asked to return as a tutor for the January 1991 school. We now have to select a candidate for this from the nominations received. In February the District Group Study Exchange Team from Poona India visited a joint meeting between Loganholme, Logan, Wishart and Beenleigh clubs. Our club home hosted one of the members for a time during that week. This year we nominated Delwyn Hansen and Mark Devine to attend the District 963 RYLA Camp. Delwyn returned to the club very thankful and appreciative for the knowledge and philosophies passed out to her during the camp. In closing may I say that International Service is a very
important part of Rotary activity and look forward to a continuation of
our club participation to help educate and bring the world closer together
through Rotary. Community Service Report 1989-90 It has been a fulfilling year in Rotary for me. The year started with Sheryl and myself hosting Chikako along with being registrar. In September I took over the Directorship from Bob Moses who was unable to find the time needed. I could see the Club needed something to unite the members and give the Club a purpose, which I believe we achieved. Six members took part in the Blue Nurses Annual Door Knock Appeal. We also provided funds, which enabled the Woodridge State High School to run a Peer support programme, this involved a weekend camp at the Woollahra Farm for some 12 students and teachers. Bob Cramp organised a very profitable Silver Circle, which netted the Club several hundred dollars, my thanks go to Bob for his effort and dedication. The planned working bees on the bus shelters were all rained out, however a Vocational night at the Logan TAFE led to the college taking over construction and erection of the shelters. The Club will have to supply all materials with the TAFE doing all the rest at no charge. This truly must be a great partnership. The poolside meeting at Amblers was the launching pad for the Bowelscan Project. It was agreed by those present that the Club needed a project that would give us a higher profile within the community and also involve the entire membership. Bowelscan sure did this. I congratulate the Club members for total commitment and time they gave so freely. We also had tremendous support from the local medical centre and in particular the two Sisters who undertook the testing of the kits. I record our thanks to our Rotaryannes who worked alongside us during the whole project. Bob Cramp, Gil Lunn, Dave Roseby, Peter Sippel and Brian Mulherin all spent many hours of valuable time as our committee and they all worked with commitment and enthusiasm, which I am, sure rubbed off onto the whole Club, thanks fellows. DID WE ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVES? We bought the club together. As your community Service Director again next year I would ask all members to come forward with ideas for the next twelve months programme. This year's theme "ENJOY ROTARY" was very fitting for myself and I look forward to continuing friendship and participation. Martin Hansen
Rotaryannes Report 1989-90 My main objective for this year was not to raise funds, which Rotaryannes are not expected to do, but to have a year promoting fellowship; I felt this was more important. We started with our very reasonable priced and successful Cocktail Party at the Mulherins, which was well attended, no doubt to see if it was possible to have such a night for such a cost it was!!! This was followed in November with a Fancy Dress Halloween Party at the Swains, much fund being had by all. When recognised, our menu that evening included Steaming Punch and Bat's Wings and many other similar sounding taste temptations. As Christmas once again approached we contacted the Salvation Army for their advice on two families they felt most deserving to receive our Christmas Hampers, the support for these hampers was disappointing, but with extra effort from some Annes we managed to fill the baskets. With Christmas just around the corner the Rotaryannes Christmas Party was held at the Springwood Hotel. It was a very "Christmassy" night enjoyed by all, with much help being given with the arrangements and decorations. The support for our World Vision Child was poor and if the support does not improve, sadly, consideration will have to be given as to whether to continue with this worthwhile cause or not. In March our Exchange Student, Chikako Inoue returned home to Japan. A surprise farewell party was held at the Swains. Chikako's face made all the secret arrangements worthwhile. In April we entertained Abhay at an informal evening at the Roseby's, everyone cooking fish or vegetarian meals, not wishing to offend his religious beliefs only to find that Abhay did in fact eat meat, we all had a very healthy night. Our last Rotaryanne function was held in May, it was an Emma Page Jewellery Party and lunch, the profits of which we are raffling tonight. During the year we alternated between day and evening meetings, enabling those Annes with young children to attend. We had two meetings in which we discussed books that we had read and one meeting when we took along a piece of poetry to share, some were more appreciated than others. We were very pleased to contribute a small tapestry of the Club's emblem, which has been included in the large Rotary International tapestry compiled for the 1990 World Convention. My thanks to Sue Roseby for ready her RDU and to Sheryl Hansen for helping me to create the "masterpiece". In writing this report I find that this year has been more successful than I thought, and for this success I must thank those Annes who unreservedly supported all I tried to do, who offered their homes for functions and meetings and were always there when I needed help. Thank you. To Barry and Joy I offer my full support and wish them all the best for "Their Year". Jacki Lunn Membership List 1989-90 Ambler, Noel
