Rotary International President: Paulo Costa
District Governor: Pat McMonagle President: Barry Swain Theme: Honor Rotary with Faith & Enthusiasm Office Bearers 1990-91 President Barry Swain Club Service Vocational Service International Service Community Service Youth Service Chairman Darryl Hood Once again Changeover is upon us and I ask myself where did the year go? It seems no time at all since Gil handed over to me last June. The ensuring year has not been as easy for the Club as it might have been - the country's economic woes have hit us, as they have many organisations and individuals. This I am sure has affected our potential for the recruiting of new members. Nevertheless, we will have inducted six new members and have welcomed during the year Doug miles, Les McGavin, Alan Mumford, Tony Nicol together with their Rotaryannes, while tonight I will induct Jim Nolan and Darrell Slater. On the down side though, we have lost six former members. Our bus shelter project has been affected similarly, with difficulty being experienced in leasing advertising space, which has adversely affected our income for the year. Bowelscan also attracted far fewer participants than it did last year and although a most worthy community service did not swell our community funds to any great extent. Our involvement with Woodridge and Shailer Park State High Schools continued during the year. It gave me great pleasure to attend Woodridge Schools Speech Night where I presented their Citizenship Awards and received from the school an award to our club for assistance to them and their Peer Group Support Scheme. Subsequently I was asked to present certificates to those seniors who had participated in the scheme. At Shailer Park three of us conducted mock job interviews for Year Twelve students at the end of last year and this year I attended school assembly to present a copy of the Australian Medical Research Fund art book for the library. Our meetings during the year have been relaxed and relatively informal, engendering a true fellowship, which I think has been felt and appreciated by all members. I think the altered format of our club assemblies has been a success with the whole club having more opportunity to discuss aspects of any of the four avenues of service. I would, however, have liked to have seen more general participation in these social functions organised outside our normal meetings. My thanks, though, to those fellows and their Annes, who accompanied Joy and I to various Rotary functions outside the club-District Governor's changeover, Logan Sunrise charter night, District Conference and the GSE dinner to mention a few. Our Rotary Foundation Scholar, Steve Brown and Leith were farewelled in September and have kept in touch with us from London since then. Steve has been an excellent ambassador from the club, the District and indeed, Australia. It was good to welcome back to a club meeting Haruko Ishikawa who was our second exchange student. I hope that the Club will be in a position to rejoin the Youth Exchange Programme in the not too distant future and so host and send away exchange students. When making my thanks for the year I would like to thank particularly those members of the Club Service Committee who have ensured that our weekly meetings have run so smoothly during the year - Sergeant Peter, Bulletin Editor Darryl and printer Chris, Registrars Les, Dave and Ian and Programme Director, Chris. My grateful thanks of course to my board - Directors Ray, Randal, Martin and Dave, Secretary Brian, Treasurer Noel, Vice President Ian and Past President Gil who have given me such support during the year. Special thanks too, to our Youth Services Chairman, Darryl who has had a busy year with RYLA and the National Science Summer School - once again we think we are putting forward an excellent candidate for District's consideration. My special thanks to Joy who has supported me so well during the year and to the other Rotaryannes who are always so willing to be called upon for assistance, be it for organising a function, helping with Bowelscan, joining us on a door knock or simply attending our Ladies nights, where they invariably add lustre to the proceedings. Finally, my best wishes to Martin for the coming year to whom I will give my full support as Gil has supported me during the past year. Barry Swain Club Service Report 1990-91 From a Club Service point of view 1990/91 has been a year of non events. The year started off well with a change of seating format at meetings and as a result a lot more fellowship was evident. In November we had our first "solo" Melbourne Cup night for many years. That is, we did not combine with another club for the night. The evening was held at Ray and Helen Carter's house. It was a successful and entertaining evening for all. Jacki Lunn still can't find her keys and Joy Swain is still wondering how Barry managed to bring her favourite wine glass home from a Rotary meeting several weeks after Melbourne Cup. From here the year was non event. A ten year anniversary dinner outing was required. This was tentatively booked for a bus trip to the Miami Festhaus but was "killed" at board level. At the January board meeting it was decided to organise a bus trip through the "craft" areas of Maleny, Flaxton, Montville etc., coming back through Toowoomba and Kilarney area. Originally over half the club said they thought it was a good idea and that they and their spouse would be coming. The date was set almost three months in advance for the 4-5th May. The bus was booked as was accommodation in Toowoomba and Weis' Restaurant. Much time was spent in planning distances etc. to organise morning and afternoon tea stops. A week before we were due to go we could not get enough takes to even fill a mini bus. We had to cancel. Following this it was difficult to get anybody motivated to do anything more on the club service front. Yours in Rotary, Vocational Service Report 1990-91 The 1990/91 year was great fun and thanks are expressed to club members for joining in whole-heartedly in some innovative programmes and President Barry and the board for the support. Highlights include: 1. October 1990 Vocational Service Month 2. Vocational visits My thanks to my committee Charlie and Leo for their advice and support throughout the year. I would also wish to thank Darryl Hood and Brian Mulherin for their efforts on many interviews and suggest to the incoming board that perhaps thought should be given to rationalisation of the Vocational Service Directors and aspects of Youth Service. I also warmly commend, the Pride of Workmanship Award Scheme and I hope that this project continues next year. Thank you for the opportunity of service you gave me this year in Vocational Service. Randal Dennings International Service Report 1990-91 Rotary's theme for the year has been "Honour Rotary with Faith and Enthusiasm". It has been International Services endeavour to promote these goals by club activities in: 1. Rotary Foundation through the award by Rotary to Stephen Brown of a full time scholarship to University of London where he is presently undertaking studies for a M.A. in geographical education. Stephen is expected to return to Australia in August when the club may expect to hear of Stephen and his wife Leith's experiences in the UK and in Europe. A special thank you is recorded to Rotarian Darryl Hood who has throughout the year carried out the duties of councilor to Stephen. 2. Promotion of Rotary International through weekly club toasts to various overseas Rotary clubs and significant events. These toasts were supported by brief historical outlines of the particular country or subject, to promote Rotary understanding. 3. Funds have been raised through club raffles for a FAIM project - the Club has decided these funds be put towards a water supply project in New Guinea. The Club is to be addressed by Rotary District 960 District Governor Duncan Bird, whose Rotary District responsibilities include New Guinea and who is familiar with the needs of the people of New Guinea. I wish to thank the Club for contributing to International Service activities throughout the past year and I wish President Martin and his board a rewarding Rotary year in 1991/92. Yours in Rotary Community Service Report 1990-91 The Community service side of our Club activities was again fruitful, with some very worthwhile projects having been accomplished. The Club took part in three doorknock appeals, "The Cancer Fund", "Blue Nurses" and "Red Shield". Bus Shelters - We relocated two shelters (on the request of Main Roads) and erected two new ones on Bryant Road, with the frames of two more now ready. Some work and planning has gone into an enquiry for up to ten shelters. My thanks to Gil Lunn and Doug Miles for taking charge of this portion of the club activities. Two barbeques were "manned" by our members during the year, one a breakfast for the Logan Hyperdome and one for Midas. We again provided funds for the Woodridge State High School Peer Group Programme. Bowelscan was held for one week in April at the Hyperdome, although our sales of kits were well down on last year, it was a tremendous commitment from our members, Annes and volunteers. "Thanks to you all". The groundwork has been done for a Charity Golf Day at Windaroo on July 9th, which is shaping up to a great day. The support from the public has been tremendous. This day will kick start the year for our new board. As incoming President I see some challenges looming, but I am sure all members will meet them head-on and make this coming year a memorable one if we all LOOK BEYOND OURSELVES. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT Martin Hansen Youth Service Report 1990-91 The 1990-91 Rotary year has come to an end with many worthwhile achievements in the field of Youth in our community. On perusing through our Club Bulletins for the year, the following participants enjoyed the involvement with Rotary and expressed their gratitude for many memorable experiences. Rotary Foundation Scholar (based in Canberra) Lois Frazier from California USA visited the Club as guest speaker and was home hosted by the Roseby and Dennings families. In September, Stephen Brown and his wife Leith left Brisbane as our District Rotary Foundation Scholar and was bound for a twelve month study stay at the University of London. In November "mock job interviews" were carried out at the Shailer Park State High School for Grade 11 English students by Brian Mulherin, Dave Roseby and Barry Swain. In January our successful student Andrew Harris attended the National Science Summer School in Canberra and was supported by our previous candidate Noel Moseley who was asked to return as a co-ordinator and they both have been asked to be co-ordinators for the 1992 school. This is a great honour as only six are selected from the 250 top science students from around Australia so the Club can feel justly proud of these two fine young men. Also in January, we selected four students from Shailer Park State High School and two students from John Paul College to attend the inaugural ASIA Year 10 Science Summer School held in Brisbane. In April we saw two candidates Randal Swain and Ian Hood attend the RYLA Camp at Leslie Dam in Warwick. Both returned to speak to the Club on their experiences. It has been a great year for Youth Service. Darryl Hood |
