Presidents Report 1992-93

Mr Chairman, District Governor's Official Representative Bill, President-Elect Randal, Guests of the Club, Ladies and Gentlemen, Rotarians and their Ladies.

It is my privilege to present the Report of the Rotary Club of Loganholme for the Rotary Year 1992/1993. In doing so, might I first acknowledge the support received from, and the effort expended by all of our members. We are only a small club, too small we would all agree, and with a membership below that considered by Rotary International as being the minimum for a viable club. That we have held our position and maintained the enthusiasm of members reflects credit on all members, and I have pleasure in acknowledging this.

Nonetheless, our failure during the year to go close to achieving our target of 25 members by this changeover night is a matter of considerable regret. The problem is common throughout our Rotary District, and throughout Australian Rotary, with only the opening of new clubs providing any growth. Almost all clubs have fewer members tonight than they did a year ago, and certainly far fewer than they had five years ago.

I have on at least two previous occasions asked District Governors to approach this problem from a District basis, and been rejected so may I as a final presidential act, again ask the District Governor, through his representative here with us this evening, to set up a suitably qualified "ad hoc" committee, including non-Rotarians, with "carte blanche" terms of reference, to ascertain why today's young business and professional people do not join Rotary.

From our club's viewpoint, I know Randal plans to overcome our membership problem this coming year, and I pledge my personal support, and am certain all members do likewise. We have broadened our base, by having voted to remove all restriction on membership on the grounds of gender, and whether this is used to partially overcome our problems is a matter for the incoming President and his board. In 1908 Rugby players in Yorkshire sought payment for time they took off work to play major games, were refused, and broke away from the horrified Rugby Union to form the Rugby League, and secure payment. If in 1993, all national Rugby Union organise forms of generous payment for their players, and the sky has not fallen, then I guess we can cope with Lady Rotarians.

It is considered our efforts during the year have been solid rather than spectacular. Individual directors have covered particular aspects in their individual reports, but it is felt we have in some small way improved things for children in difficulty at our local Shailer Park High School, for the Salvation Army in Logan City, for the Logan Hospital, for Lifeline in our area, and contributed to the Western Queensland Disaster Appeal, and to one of our great Rotary achievements, the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. Additionally, we made life a little easier for residents of one village in Bangladesh, by providing the funds for sinking a well to provide permanent running water for that village.

We have played a part in youth development during the year, having sponsored a local girl, Sarah Burton to the National Science Summer School in Canberra, and a local lad, Cameron Douglas-Savage to the Year 10 Science Summer School conducted in Brisbane jointly by Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology. Additionally we upgraded our annual award, based on Rhodes Scholarship lines, to a girl in the Shailer Park High graduating class, and I had the pleasure of attending the speech night to present this. We had as our guests for one meeting the members of the John Paul College Interact Club, and members of that club acted as guest speakers, providing them with a further chance to develop their skills in this direction. Peter Lunn, a local lad, was our nominee to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award training camp, and passed the training with flying colours. Randall Swain, a former nominee of our club to RYLA, attended the camp as a member of the course directing staff, which is a matter of great pride to the club, as it must be to his parents, Barry and Joy.

During the year, our District hosted an exchange team from the Tynside district of England, and two of our members, Martin Hansen and Sheryl, and Doug Miles and Kay, provided hospitality for the visitors.

We held one meeting of the club at International House, within the University of Queensland. This is one of the very great achievements of Rotary in Queensland, and it was pleasing to learn the original aims of the founder, Past District Governor the late Bert Martin, for the student resident body to be made up of equal numbers of overseas students and Australian students, still applies.

Club Service activities were extremely well organised and all enjoyed our social activities - our Christmas meeting was voted the best night for quite some time, as was our recent progressive dinner. Two excellent vocational visits took place during the year, being both informative and highly enjoyable. An innovation during the year was to have quite a number of normal meetings to which our ladies were invited. These were nights when it was considered our guest speaker would be of particular interest to the ladies, and continuation of this is recommended to the incoming President and his board.

In conclusion, might I thank Billie for her support and assistance, might I thank Secretary Jim, Treasurer Gil, all of the directors, Graeme, Noel, Al, Ian, also Barry and Dave for their help and advice, and each and every member of the club.

On behalf of Loganholme Rotary 1992/1993, I wish success, health and good fortune to Randal and all in Loganholme Rotary 1993/1994.

Brian Mulherin

Community Service Report 1992-93

This Rotary year saw a significant increase in requests for assistance from many worthy organisations, which are undoubtedly stretched to the limit in this current economic climate.

On limited funds our Club has been able to provide the following support:

SHAILER PARK HIGH SCHOOL: Established a $450 ongoing fund for the Shailer Park High School to enable the School Administrators to provide immediate financial assistance to homeless students.

SALVATION ARMY: Supplied a $350 pager to assist Darrell Slater in his new position working with the street kids of SE Qld. Club members again turned out in force to act as drivers for the Red Shield Appeal this year.

LOGAN HOSPITAL AUXILIARY: $1,000 to provide necessary items not funded by Government grants.

LIFELINE: $1,000 in support of the essential work carried out by the Logan/Albert Centre.

WESTERN QLD DISASTER RELIEF: Our clubs ongoing support to this worthy cause has seen the following donations made:
" $250 to Rotary Club of Archerfield towards fuel costs in delivering fodder and supplies to western Queensland
" $300 from Rotaryanne Sheryl Hansen and the ladies of Windaroo Golf Club plus
" $300 from the Club to the Rotary Disaster Relief Fund

ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND: $500 in recognition of the excellent work carried out by the Rotary Health Research Fund.

Finally my thanks goes to the Community Service Committee for their willing support and trust that all Club members found that "REAL HAPPINESS IS HELPING OTHERS".

Yours in Rotary
Graeme Bosanquet

Vocational Service Report 1992-93

During the 1992-93 Rotary year it was the privilege of the Vocational Service Committee to organise two vocational visits. These were to the Underwood Mail Exchange - the most modern mail exchange in Australia at the time, and capable of processing over a million articles of mail every night - and the Police Museum at Police Headquarters in Brisbane - a very educational and well set out display of police memorabilia.

Both visits proved to be extremely successful social events for the club's members and their ladies as well as being successful vocational visits.

Club Service Report 1992-93

My year as Club Service Director was very enjoyable in that it provided the opportunity to serve the Club in a practical way.

Among the successful Club Service activities this year have been the joint meetings with Goodna, Melbourne Cup night, Christmas function, Australia Day breakfast, the GSE meeting and the progressive dinner. The ladies joined us for all of these occasions, which added greatly to the fellowship.

A variety of guest speakers were enjoyed with topics ranging from computer virus protection to street kids; from football clubs to communication research and development; and from politics to job placement programs.

The one disappointment of the year was the non-acceptance by six people for membership of the Club and the decline in membership due to Tony Nicol's resignation for work reasons.

I extend my thanks to my committee and particularly would like to thank the following Rotarian for their stand-in support during the later part of the year.

Acting Sergeant Darryl Hood who could always be relied upon to generate at least one fine for every member.

The various members who acted as Bulletin Editor including Noel Ambler, Chris Monahan and Barry Swain.

I specially would like to thank all members of the club, for without your support as duty officers, fellowship officers, job talk speakers, replacement guest speakers and the like the club would not operate smoothly.

Yours in Rotary
Alan Short
