Presidents Report 1993/94

1993-1994 began with the issuing of a RI Presidential Challenge by our International President Robert Bath to all Rotary Club Presidents as follows:

"to use the personal efforts of all your Rotary Members to serve others as part of the goal of balanced club achievement i.e. service through club projects where each Rotarian can say he or she used
my time
my hands
my eyes
my ears
my heart."

History shows that for this year our club received a RI Presidential Citation for meeting the challenge and "demonstrating the spirit of Rotary through exemplary service and fellowship activities" in our local community.

As well our club received at District Conference in Roma:

" Best Content for our Club Bulletin Award;
" Best Bulletin Overall Award
" 100% FAIM Award

To look at the year and to judge the Club by reference only to Awards and Citations is I think to miss the point.

Every member of our local community WILL and DOES judge our club by what they hear and see of:
" what we do; and
" what we believe in
the awards are just, hopefully, reflections of what has been actually achieved.

From my viewpoint as president, my judgement is that the club has this year believed in what it did and did what it believed in. The attached directors reports detail the achievement of our collective goals and objectives and are a record of which all of our club can be justly proud.

I thank all Rotarians and their partners for their sacrifice and service to the community - you have put "service above self" often this year. Both Sue and I have also appreciated your personal support. I thank my board for all their advice and huge effort this year. Only those who have experienced the "rifle shot" nature of our board meetings can appreciate what they have been through. It has been a pleasure to serve the club and the community with all my board and I rejoice in my director's and officer's success that has been justly theirs this year.

Whilst not wanting to single out any one person for special mention I must record my appreciation to Brian Mulherin and his efforts with the Intermesh. Brian, the District awards only confirm what we know to be true … you produced the best bulletin in the District and you entertained, encouraged, recorded and enthused us all year. Thanks for all your creativity and effort. I hope that the District will benefit from your gifts this year as will Tony Sidaway who I know will have a great chance on all three bulletin awards! (Watch the cover of the Intermesh Rotarians!)

I wish Les and his team great success and achievement in 1994/95 as I know he will, as I have, received 100% from all members. I know Les will also benefit, as I have, from the sage advice, support and assistance from our solid core of past directors and officers of the club. I pledge my full support to him for the coming year.

Finally I wish to publicly record my thanks to Sue who to my mind exemplified a "PERFECT PARTNER". She organised, pitched in, typed, telephoned and ran around not only for me and the Club but also for the Partners. Thank you my dear for all your empathy and effort.

I thank you all for the privilege of serving you as president of our great club this year.

Club Service Report 1993-94

1993/94 was a year, which saw the club grow and change in a number of ways all of which added to the enjoyment of serving the club this year.

Fellowship and membership were the prime goals of the club service committee. The main fellowship activities of the year were:
" A combined Melbourne Cup Eve meeting with Logan Club
" The annual meeting with the Goodna Club
" A joint meeting with Logan, Logan Sunrise and Beenleigh Clubs
" And a poolside night.

The social and fellowship of the club was further enhanced by monthly partner nights. Membership of the club increased during the year from 19 to 23 including the acceptance of the club's first lady member. Unfortunately two of the club's treasured members were forced to leave due to work commitments.

Program organiser, Graeme, provided a variety of guest speakers, which included Yellow Pages, Police Citizens, Electrical Safety, Snakes in SE Qld Computer Networking, and OPTUS. Rotary Information was also an important part of this year's calendar through two Rotary quizzes and speakers on Rotary Health Research and FAIM.

I wish to extend both my personal thanks and the appreciation of all members to the Club Service Committee for their help in making this a great one of fellowship. Special mention must go to bulletin editor Brian whose flair and style was rewarded at the District Conference by the presentation to the club of two bulletin awards.

My thanks is also extended to all members for their eager participation as both officers, fellowship officers, job talk speakers and the like.

Community Service Report 1993-94

This last year has seen some very interesting activities undertaken in the community service avenue. In particular it saw the commencement of a new fundraising activity - "Chook Manure" sales. Dave Roseby and Jim Nolan being the brains behind the venture. Dave being the organiser and Jim the supplier. Significant fellowship was enjoyed by the members down in the "chook" shed bagging this gastronomic substance and finally on the sales pitch in the local streets. Income from the sales was excellent and I am sure will be improved in the new year.

Various community group representatives attended the club meetings through the year and provided extremely interesting guest speaker presentations. Speakers included representatives from Lifeline, Woodridge Police Citizens Youth Centre, Cancer Fund Nurse of the Year Entrant and Beenleigh Ambulance to name some.

The major fundraising activity held was a Charity Golf Day at the Logan Country Club. This function raised in excess of $1,500 and the club was very appreciative of the sponsors, which supported the event.

Funds raised this year due to the efforts of the club members include:
" Logan City Office - Lifeline
" Woodridge Police Citizens
" Cancer Fund
" Beenleigh Ambulance
" Bike for Bibles - Bible Society
" Salvation Army

Finally, may I express thanks to my committee for their support during the year.

Vocational Service Report 1993-94

In company with all other avenues of service the program for vocational service this year was a full and varied one.

On the 4th October 1993, we marked the beginning of Vocational Service Month by inviting Geoff Gough of the Logan Country Club to be our guest speaker. Geoff was to tell us something of the life of a professional golfer but his address was much broader than that and quite philosophical too and it was very well received.

The first of our Vocational Service visits took place on the evening of the 18th October 1993, when members and partners were kindly hosted by David and Lynn Healey of AOTEA Fencing at Slacks Creek, manufacturers of tubular fencing products. There was an interesting tour of the factory at Slacks Creek followed by a demonstration of the powder coating process and afterwards we enjoyed a Chinese Banquet.

Two Vocational Excellence Awards were presented this year. The first was presented to the Shailer Park Medical Centre at our meeting of the 28th March 1994 in recognition of the efforts of the practice and its partners over the years particularly in relation to the Club's Bowel Scan project.

The second award was presented on the 9th May 1994, to Cec Munns, the Principal of John Paul College in recognition of the remarkable work performed by him since the College's inception.

The final major activity of the year was a Vocational Service Visit to the School of Microelectronic Engineering at Griffith University on the 23rd May 1994. This visit also was a most interesting one and members and partners and some of the University staff afterwards enjoyed a fine restaurant meal nearby at L'Escargot.

My thanks go to all members of the Vocational Service Committee for their assistance throughout the year and I take the opportunity to congratulate President Randal as 'CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP" for a job very well done.

Approximately $600 worth of goods was sold for World Vision as
well as learning and appreciating the circumstances of women in
other countries.
For those interested, World Vision is holding its City Hall exhibition
on the 1-6 August.

The major fund raising project for the year was "A Spring Afternoon" and the success of which does to the enormous effort put in by everyone, from cakes and worm casting (from Lyn Bosanquet), jams (Lyn Sippel), hair scrunchies (Helen Carter), chocolates (Joy Swain), cuppee dolls (Suzanne Nelson), relish (Sue Roseby) and wood and craft items (Narelle and Alan Short) and the contributions to the raffle draw (Carole Hood, Joy Swain, Sue Roseby, Pat Nolan, Denise West, Helen Carter etc.)

We subsequently handed a cheque to the Beenleigh Ambulance for $1,000 (of which over $800 came from Rotaryannes) to go towards the last needed defibrillator for our area. $100 was also contributed towards the food items in the Christmas hampers, and $300 to the Shailer Park Primary School towards musical equipment for their newly formed band.

I would especially like to thank Jacki and Gil Lunn for looking after the financial records and Jacki for being the "unofficial" treasurer and Alan Short for all his printing expertise for "A Spring Afternoon".

The year has been fun for me and I would like to thank EVERYONE for their support and friendship.
