Rotary International President: Herbert Brown
District Governor: Brian Price President: Jim Nolan Theme: Act with integrity - Serve with Love - Work for Peace Office Bears 1995-96 President Jim Nolan Another year in the life of the Rotary Club has been completed. 1995-96 will not be recorded as a spectacular year with large sums of money being raised for the community, but rather a year when the club was bonded together with good fellowship and friendliness towards each other. The year was marked with an increased number of ladies nights and functions to include the ladies including combined meetings with other clubs in the district and a boat trip on the Logan River at Christmas time. There was a great range of guest speakers at our regular meetings and working bees were arranged to paint bus shelters and bag up chook manure for the Boy Scouts. Recently our exchange student, Airi Yamada, arrived from Japan and is currently living with the Hampson family. Airi has settled into school at John Paul College and is enjoying her stay in Queensland very much. My sincere thanks and gratitude to Don Brough, (my secretary), for his support and assistance and to all the members of the board for their assistance throughout the year. Jim Nolan Secretary's Report 1995-96 The past year has slipped by quickly and has been a great learning process for me. We have lost two valuable members in Darryl Slater and Peter Sippel due to the location of their respective businesses. We have however gained just one in Roy Somerville and we welcome Roy and his partner Anne to the club. Darryl Slater has not been lost to Rotary as he joined Balmoral Club. Peter Sippel is having a rest for a while. Roy Somerville has been a Rotarian before and we look forward to his input. For the club to progress we need new members to bring new ideas and vitality to the club. This year we have tried some initiatives to gain new members but acceptance has been slow. It is incumbent on each and every member to support membership development to the full and assist the committee to identify worthy business people and follow through with an invitation to join Rotary. I use the next two quotes from a book titles, "How to Motivate Manage & Market Yourself" by Lisa McInnes, Daniel Johnson and Winston Marsh, which I think are pertinent. "The only difference between a grave and a rut is that the rut has the ends kicked out". "What we can conceive and believe we can achieve". I thank President Jim, the Directors, Members and my partner Dorothy for their support during the past year and look forward to its continuance over the ensuring twelve months. Don Brough My induction as Club Service Director came part way into the year. Accordingly the year was slightly disrupted and we may not have achieved all that was required. Having said that, we had a number of excellent functions during the year. The Melbourne Cup Function, held in conjunction with Logan Club, was well attended and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The mock races were chaotic and bookies were generous. All in all, a top night. For something different, we held the Christmas party on a boat cruising the Albert and Logan Rivers and generally getting a different perspective on part of our local area. A rain squall just as we were embarking didn't dampen the spirits and even served to keep the bities at bay. After the rain cleared the rest of the voyage passed without incident. Our planned Battles of the Ashes against Logan Club has to be postponed after the rain in early May made all the cricket grounds unusable. We will undoubtedly get the opportunity before long to display our prowess with the leather and willow. We have had a wide range of guest speakers during the year. Some of the highlights were John Grant who showed us how to beat procrastination, John Mulvey who showed us how to Juggle our Way to Relaxation and Sharon Baker who took us on a trip into the wilds of Alaska. Many thanks to those Club members who assisted in finding guest speakers through the year. On a negative note, we lost the services of our Bulletin editor through the year and the quality and timing of the Club Bulletins suffered as a result. As I said earlier many thanks to all Club members who assisted during the year and I look forward to a wide and interesting range of Club activities in the coming year. David Gardner The highlight of my year was to get our club to accept an Exchange Student from Japan without sharing the benefits of youth exchange with another Club. It was a battle to find sufficient host parents to do this alone but I believe the benefits to our club will far outweigh any inconvenience to members. Our intrepid Internet surfer Tony Sidaway commenced the year with great gusts and enthusiasm with toasts to clubs of a personal flavour with some toasts to both clubs occurring within a 24 hour period. It is great to see Tony back on deck and surfing the Internet and passing on interesting information with international toasts throughout the Rotary World. Many club members have met with your International Director to receive their liquid refreshments to take home from the car park as a result of winning the weekly raffle and help raise funds for our club. Hopefully our club will have some involvement with the GSE team when they come in from District 7890 in the USA. Loganholme Rotary Club had a very good ambassador to represent the club at RYLA camp this year. Her name is Gillian Leslie and I am sure we will hear of her endeavours of achievements in the future. The Club's nominations for the CRA National Science School were not successful this year. Our Club has once again maintained 100% membership with FAIM. It was a shame that the RYPE weekend camp had to be cancelled due to lack of participants this year, hopefully this will carry on next year. We are in the planning stages of an international night (Japanese style) with the help of Airi. The commencement of my year as Youth and International Director saw the departure of our shared exchange student Tanya from Mexico and in closing it was great to finish my year with another student from Japan. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Jim and my fellow board members on an interesting and successful club year. Richard Hampson Vocational Service Report 1995-96 During the course of the Rotary year 1995/96 it has been my pleasure to act as Director of the Vocational Committee. I have enjoyed the assistance and support from the Club in general with big roll-ups for our Vocational visits to Tubemakers and 4KQ where we all learned something new in the way others earn their livelihoods. October is the official Rotary Vocational Month and on the 16th October last we held our Pride of Workmanship Award Dinner. The club responded with an attendance of almost 50 persons to the event. The evening turned out to be most successful and I am looking forward to an even more dynamic presentation during October of this year. The club awarded seven Pride of Workmanship Awards on the night to a very diverse group of well deserving recipients and as the committee was unable to split the ultimate awardees for the Annual Vocational Excellence Award we broke with the tradition and presented two of these Vocational Excellence Awards this year. The recipients were GRAHAM MARTIN for services to Small Business, and Mrs NOELENE MUNNS for services to Education. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Committee, the Club generally, President Jim and my wife Suzanne for the assistance freely given when it counted. Peter Nelson Treasurer's Report 1995-96 In the past the Treasurer's report has been the unaudited annual financial statement of accounts as at 31 May which was the end of our financial year. Since incorporation, however, our year by law must end on 30 June each year. This has meant preparing two financial statements for very little benefit. This year our audited financial statement will be presented at the Annual General Meeting and this report will simply give our expense and income under broad headings. In the Club Service Account, our annual subscriptions added $2,720 to our balance. Over the year we paid $9,109.10 for catering and charged $10,063.50 for meals. Weekly raffles, fines and proceeds from the box added a further $1,670.91 and income from sources other than the foregoing has been $1,074.28. From the account, we have paid $2,235.53 for dues to Rotary International, District and Rotary Down Under and have donated $600 to Rotary Foundation. Expenses for running the club have been $3,867.15. Our last monthly statement shows a balance in the account of $2,396.16, which is $635.20 better than at the same time last year. The Community Service Account has remained fairly static through the year when we started with a balance of $552.03 of which $289.70 was Rotaryannes funds. Our only disbursements during the year have been $100 to Shailer Park High School and $82 to Shailer Park Boy Scouts. Income has been from the Bus Shelters and the fertilizer project. The current reconciled balance is $1,819.01 of which $868 is Rotaryannes funds. Barry Swain |
