1996/97 President's Report

Despite the fact that my year as president has now come to an end, I still feel privileged to have been asked to serve as president of the Rotary Club of Loganholme. It's a joy to be able to say that I believe the club is in a better state now that it was this time last year and therefore I have succeeded as President and the Club has also succeeded in its role as a Rotary Club as we have worked together to achieve our goals.

At the start of the year the Board set a total of 17 goals for the year. Eleven of these goals have been achieved or are still in progress. These were:
1. The conduct of weekly member's information talks
2. Increase membership
3. Business forum for the new Meadowbrook campus of Griffith University
4. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Paul Harris' death
5. Service the disabled - Cancer fund
6. Liaise with Logan City Council on Meadowbrook Park
7. Start an Interact Club at Chisholm College
8. Hold the annual Pride of Workmanship Awards
9. Conduct vocational visits
10. Host an international exchange student
11. Hold a Club international social night

Personally, the highlights for the year have been: inducting three new members into the Club, the Paul Harris night where a place was set of Paul Harris and the subsequent award of a Paul Harris Fellow to Randal Dennings, the presentation of a special award to Don Brough at the Pride of Workmanship Awards night, having an exchange student of the calibre of Airi in our midst, the Christmas function at my place, surfing the Net on New Years Eve to wish Rotarians around the globe greetings of the season, and the Griffith University night.

I wish to thank each and every member of the Club for their support during the year and in particular the Board for the time and effort they put into meeting our goals.

There is always someone behind the scenes, and I would like to thank Narelle for her support and understanding during the past year.

I also wish Chris every success in his coming year.

Secretary Report 1996/97

Another year in harness has slipped by quickly and I have to admit I am still learning.

We have lost one member in Richard Hampson due to business commitment. We have however gained Jennifer Quinton (now Radley) and Andrew McKillop, bringing the number of members to 21. Sadly we are about to lose Les McGavin to the Gold Coast.

If the club is to progress and support the community we need new members to bring new ideas and vitality to the club. This year we have tried some initiatives to gain new members but acceptance has been slow. It is incumbent on each and every member to support membership development to the full and assist the committee to identify worthy business people and follow through with an invitation to join Rotary.

This year I also became, by default, the Intermesh editor, producing 47 issues, of hopefully, good information, wisdom and statistics.

I thank President Allan, the Directors, Members and specially my partner Dorothy for their support during the past year and look forward to its continuance over the enduring 12 months under the leadership of Christ Monahan.

Club Service Report 1996/97

This Rotary year contained a number of highlights in Club Service for the club as well as myself when I was bestowed as a Paul Harris Fellow.

Club meetings were highlighted with a good array of guest speakers with an emphasis on business related activities. By way of special events, the Paul Harris night for the 50th anniversary of his death, which also coincided with the Club's anniversary, ranks as one of the best meetings I've attended while in this Club. It was particularly gratifying to have our Charter Members, Chris Monahan, Darryl Hood and David Roseby as well as our Paul Harris Fellows recognised on this night.

The fact that this year was indeed a good year was in no small part due to the manner members of the Club Service Committee went about their tasks and moved and adjusted to the changing environment that exists in Rotary. In particular I would like to recognise and thank the efforts of Secretary Don, Treasurer Barry, Program organiser Ian and Registrar Les as well as his assistance Barry and Graeme.

I thank the Club for their understanding and support during my time of bereavement and in particular thank Don and Roy for standing in during my absence.

Finally I welcome our new members, Jennifer, Brian and Andrew.

International and Youth Service Report 1996/97

On returning to International Service Director part way through the Rotary Year, we achieved a successful contribution to the Rotary World.

The most enjoyable experience was hosting our Japanese Youth Exchange Student, Airi Yamada, from the prefecture of Chiba, in Japan, which is a neighboring city to Tokyo.

During Airi's stay with the club, she was a very pleasant and grateful student for those whom she spent time with. Our sincere thanks goes to John Paul College for making available a place at the school for her at no cost to the club and also supplying all uniforms and books.

Most importantly, we thank the host families, being the Brough's, Hood's and Ambler's, for their generosity and hospitality in making Airi feel most welcome in their family homes.

Hosting an exchange student is a two way experience and the fulfillment comes with what energies and understanding are put into the relationship as to what you receive out of the experience.

Our International Night this year was celebrated at the Greek Club, which was well attended and enjoyed by all members and guests. Our guest speaker for the night was the Green Consul to Queensland, Alex Freeleagus, who spoke on migration to this country with reference to his family.

The 'Information and Technology Era' has now engulfed this club with Tony Sidaway contacting other Rotary Clubs around the world via the Internet. Once Tony established contact, we continued on the sentiment that our club do an International Toast to a club in some part of the world (ie. South Africa, England, America etc.) We thank Tony for his enthusiasm and presentations to the club, which even included a meeting chat 'live' on the Internet.

During the year, Barry Swain joined Carole and myself on a tour of Japan where we visited Airi at her home with her parents and spent two days there. After these 2 days, a past exchange student from 1984, Haruko Ishikawa became our guide for the next 12 days in which we toured the length of Japan via the Bullet Train. We are all grateful for Rotary International contacts, which made this all possible.

In February, Carole and I were also revisited by the father and mother of an ex youth exchange student, Pernilla Wall from Sweden.

We received three nominations for an outgoing Youth Exchange Student, but owing to a change of interview dates, they were able to be placed with other clubs and were all successful with their nominations to district and hence to three different countries.

Nominations and participants were sent to the Year 10 Science School in Brisbane in January.

For those members who assisted me during the year, thank you and I would like to wish incoming Graeme Bosanquet a successful year.

Vocational Service Report 1996/97

It has been my privilege to act as Vocational Service Director during the 1996/97 year working under the guidance of President Allan Short.

The year has been quite busy with most of the goals set at the beginning of the year having been achieved.

Our Pride-of-Workmanship Awards was the highlight of the Vocational year and this year the Club recognised 6 employees for their efforts in the workplace. Our Vocational Excellence Award this year went to Garry Russell KELLAR who is the CEO of Logan City Council. This year we introduced a new 'Rotarian Award' made to a fellow Rotarian who has provided a special service to the club or to the community or to his Vocation. The proud recipient of this inaugural award was our Secretary PP Don Brough PHF.

As a Club, we have attended 3 Vocational visits: TAFE of Printing, Griffith University Information Night and Logan TAFE College visit.

Although we intended to commence a Probus Club in our area I regret that at this stage we have not achieved this objective. Perhaps next year?

The awarding of a Bursary to a student at Shailer Park High School was again made thanks to the generosity of Billy Mulherin. This grant is very well received by the school and I feel that more work along this path should be looked at for the future as it definitely supplies a need in the best possible way.

I would like to sincerely thank the Board of Directors for their support during the year and take this opportunity to say that it has been a great pleasure to work with President Al who has worked tirelessly during his Presidential year and kept us on-our-toes with constant follow ups and reminders to make sure that what was promised was delivered!

After three years as Vocational Director I will be handing the responsibilities over to Brian Collard who will be making his debut as a Director. Brian is a thinking and most capable person to hand over the reins to, and I have every confidence in the future management of this portfolio. I will of course be ready and available to assist in any way if asked. My very best wishes to Brian for 1997/98.

I would like to wish the new Board of Directors every success and I am sure under the driving force of President Chris Monahan the Club will continue to expand and prosper.

Community Service Report 1996/97

It was a funny kind of year for the Community Services Committee. Quite a number of activities were being pursued, but none were brought to completion or fruition by the end of the year.

The major activities planned for the year were:

1. The development of an Interact Club at Chisholm College, and

2. Community work in liaison with the Logan City Council to upgrade a part in our area for use by local youth.

The Interact Club at Chisholm College is still being considered a viable activity, however staffing changes within the College have not enabled a consistent application of effort by either ourselves or the College. This has been somewhat rectified late in the Rotary year with a teacher at the College given the role of co-ordinating the Club. I have passed this on to the incoming director and I am sure he will have the Club up and running in no time at all.

In regards to the parks work with Logan City, we have been working with the Council on two fronts.

Firstly, we have given the Council an expression of interest to get involved in the riverfront development of parkland at Meadowbrook. This is a long-term project and no further activity is envisaged until the Council finalise their master plan for the area. The timing of this is unknown.

Secondly, in conjunction with a study done by the Logan City Council Community Service Department, a part at Roselea Street Shailer Park was identified as being in need of some upgrade work. Consultation with both the Parks Department and the Community Services Department on the park's needs and our level of involvement followed. However following local resident's representations about the use of the park by local youths, both Council Departments felt that any upgrade work would be unwise in the short term. The focus has now shifted to Tudor Park at Loganholme, but planning for this park is at a much earlier stage and no activity will be undertaken by the Council until a community consultation process has been undertaken.

Finally I would like to wish Stephen Hendey and his new committee all the best for the new year and hope that they are able to bring all their plans and goals to fruition.
