Rotary International President: Glen Kinross
District Governor: Earle Russ President: Chris Monahan Theme: Show Rotary Cares Office Bearers 1997-98 President Chris Monahan The theme for the Rotary Year 1997-98 has been "Show Rotary Cares". Consistent with this theme we determined this year to concentrate on "hands on" projects to benefit both local and international communities. As an overall guide to keep us on track towards having a successful year, we sought to earn a Presidential Citation, which is granted to clubs, which carry out a stated number of projects within each of the four avenues of service. I am glad to report that the goals set by each Director have been met and in most cases exceeded. Particulars of just some of the activities of the club has undertaken during the year appear in the Directors' reports set out on the following pages in this Changeover Bulletin. It certainly has been a busy year. Early in the Rotary Year the members overwhelmingly accepted a proposal that we have a change of meeting venue to Fitzy's Hotel and Convention Centre. That move has been most successful. Attendance figures have been very good (of which, more later) and the venue has been spoken of highly by our visitors and guests. At about the time of our move we hosted a joint meeting involving our neighbouring clubs Beenleigh and Logan for the District Governor's visit and that evening District Governor Earle Russ inducted our newest member Lorraine Howson. During the course of the year I had the pleasure of presenting a Paul Harris Fellowship to a local man on behalf of Rotarian Narasimtian Ramji of Bangalore India and also a Rotary Club of Loganholme Special Award to our immediate Past President Allan Short acknowledging his great contribution to the Club. One of the highlights of the year was the District Conference held in late March. Ten of our members made the trip to Dalby for a most enjoyable weekend and Loganholme was very much to the fore receiving an Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (for reaching contributions of $250 per member) on the Saturday, and on the Sunday the award for best attendance at meetings by a club in Group 5. It has been a pleasure and an honour to serve the club as President for 1997-98. I wish to thank all members for their support throughout the year and in particular all members of the Board for their substantial contributions in working towards and achieving our goals. Finally, I wish to thank my wife Christine for her support. Our son Michael was born shortly before the start of the Rotary year and there were many occasions when she could have done with another pair of hands at home! I wish Peter and his Board every success in the coming year. Chris Monahan Secretarys Report 1997-98 Another year in harness has slipped by quickly and it seems the job became more easier as time went on. We had a disappointing year in relation to membership having lost four members, namely, Les McGavin, Roy Somerville, Brian Collard and Andrew McKillop for mainly business reasons with the exception of Les McGavin who moved to the Gold Coast. We have however gained Lorraine Howson. This turnover had the effect of reducing the number of members to 17. The biggest disappointment during the year, for myself, was the cancellation of the 1000 club. This had great potential, however lack of support and increasing costs did not make the project viable. If the club is to progress and support the community, we need new members to bring new ideas and vitality to the club. This year we have tried a number of initiatives, particularly the 5 for 1 program to gain members but acceptance of Rotary by the community leaders who have been approached has been disappointing. It is incumbent on each and every member to support membership development to the full and assist the committee to identify worthy business people and follow through with an invitation to join Rotary. I thank President Chris, the Directors, Members and especially my partner Dorothy for their support during the past year. I have not nominated for the position this year due to business reasons and wish the new incumbent, Tony, every success and assure him of my support and guidance should be need it. Don Brough Club Service Report 1997-98 We now come to the end of another year in Club Service and we have experienced a wide variety of Club Service activities, in which operation has run smoothly. One overwhelming success was the relocation of our club meeting venue to the Loganholme Tavern in Bryants Road. Along with the move came very good attendance figures for our club meeting and glowing remarks from our guests. Great interest in our meetings was by no small part attributable from the array of guest speakers organised by our President Chris. The only goal that was not achieved was growth in our membership, but if growth is obtained by members only, it is something that we do not see as undesirable, as the quality and interest of our members has been shown by attendances at weekly meetings, district assembly and district conference. To reminisce a little, during the year we were enlightened
by the contact with: " Visit to meet World President, Glenn Kinross " Visit to Balmoral Club " Social meetings involving our partners: " Guest speakers Finally I have enjoyed my Rotary Year and hope that my fellow members have as well and this was all complemented by a rewarding working relationship with our President, Chris. Darryl Hood During the course of this Rotary Year our club has been involved in the following items under the International and Youth Service Banner: 1. In October we had a good roll-up of Club members who got through an enormous amount of clean-up and repacking at the DONATIONS IN KIND warehouse. Our Clubs donation of several ambulance stretchers (thanks Al) was greatly appreciated. 2. In January we sent five young students to the Siemens Science Experience at the Griffith University, Nathan. 3. In February our International Night out was a partners night at the Mongolian Restaurant in Fortitude Valley. 4. During the course of this year we have contributed $400 to the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Funds - renewed our Clubs International House subscription for another two years - donated $100 each to Mike Pitcher and Stacey Cross to assist them in continuing their humanitarian work overseas. 5. Our request to the Qld Ambulance Service for a 4WD ambulance for the Solomon Islands has been vigorously pursued by Al Short for over 12 months now and requires just one more signature to be realised. 6. In May we sponsored an outstanding participant, Megan Mooney, in the RYLA Program held in Warwick. 7. During April and May three outgoing exchange student applications were considered with the Club recommending 16yr old Anita Passaris to the District for consideration. 8. We are currently processing an application from Kris Humphrys for prestigious RIO TINTO SCIENCE FORUM that is held in Canberra each January. Finally, big thank you to my committee and those members who assisted in the above achievements and my very best wishes to Jim and his team in 1998/99. Graeme Bosanquet Vocation Service Report 1997-98 The objectives of Vocational Service is to encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society. At the commencement of this Rotary year, it was decided to encourage underprivileged High School students by financial grants. To achieve this endeavour, a flea market sale of donated goods was held in September, which raised limited funds. Unsold items were donated to the Women's Crisis Care Centre Woodridge. In October, a Pride of Workmanship Awards night was arranged through significant effort of President Elect Peter Nelson. Six local persons were recognised by Pride of Workmanship Awards. A vocational Excellence Award was presented to Huan Frazer for his service to the community. During November mock job interviews were held at Chisholm College - this project was extremely well received by students and well supported by Club members who gave of their business time to support the project. Also during November a vocational visit was made to Powers Brewery at Yatala. This was a partners night, which was most informative and enjoyable, even though it rained. In January, Vocational Director Brian Collard resigned through business pressures. Brian served the Club with distinction and dedication as a member and director. The significant contribution by PP Barry Swain to the Youth Achievers Program at the Kingston High School is acknowledged. This is the fourth year of Barry's participation in the program, which encourages Year 10b students in self esteem, setting goals in their lives and achieving betterment through further education. A group of about 25 students meet fortnightly and included an annual camp, at Camp Stacey, Cunningham Gap. Barry advises it is gratifying to see the improvement in students in each year of participation. In May a vocational visit was arranged to the Salvation Army Centre at Fortitude Valley, where the difficulties of dealing with destitute and homeless persons was highlighted. On behalf of the Vocational Service Committee, I congratulate President Chris for an excellent year, the objects of Vocational Service have been achieved in an exemplary fashion by Club members. I express appreciation to fellow Club members and partners for their support and enthusiasm throughout the year. I wish President Elect Peter Nelson and his board a happy and rewarding year. David Roseby
It has been a privilege to work as Community Service Director for the 1997/98 Rotary year. I would like to thank both Chris and Don who have always been available whenever I have needed any help or guidance. I would also like to thank Peter for recognising that Community Services projects often take longer than one year to come to fruition, and with that in mind he has asked me to continue as director for the coming year. The past hard work by club members, in building and maintaining bus shelters in our area, means that we now earn a good income from royalties on the advertising placed at those sites. I am pleased to announce here some of the ways that we have been able to allocate our funds. 9. Medic Alert, @ $5 per member making us a 100% club contributor. Purchasing 2 Medic Alert necklaces and membership fees for people identified by a local doctor who could benefit by having them but may not be able to afford the $55 cost. 10. A donation of $500 to St Lukes Nursing Service for their service to our community. 11. Shailer Park High School, $450 donation, the equivalent of fare for one student to participate in the School Concert Band trip to Canberra. 12. Our special presentation tonight of $2,000 to The Salvation Army Youth Outreach Service, in recognition of the wonderful work that they do for the homeless youth. I would like to thank all of the Rotarians and families who have helped in the past year with community based projects such as the Chisholm College fete, various charity door knock appeals, and letter box drop for smoke alarms. Finally I would like to acknowledge the hard work that has been put in by PP Allan Short, who has worked tirelessly on establishing the Smoke Out Australia project. This project is now an officially endorsed district project that is gaining momentum. Since the District Assembly last month, three clubs, Balmoral, Salisbury and ourselves, have committed to make Smoke Out Australia the primary project for the 1998/99 year. At least four other clubs have expressed interest in the project. I would like to wish the new president Peter Nelson and
his incoming board every success for the 1998/99 year. |
