I am now joining the ranks of our Past Presidents with mixed feelings of sadness and relief. I am told that I will recover very quickly from this malady as future jobs are assigned to me as a member of our illustrious group. I felt there could have been more accomplished during my time as President so I reflected on the results of the past twelve months: July 1998: August 1998: September 1998: October 1998: November 1998: December 1998: CHRISTMAS BREAK January 1999: February 1999: March 1999: April 1999: ANZAC & LABOUR DAY HOLIDAYS May 1999: June 1999: Well that's it! It has been rather busy after all. I can report that Spencer Silby has been offered Master Classes in New York by the conductor of the Three Tenors fame and is set to make his mark on the world stage of famous tenors. We gained a new member with David Khoury and Les McGavin and Marie are soon to return to the fold after spending some time at the Gold Coast. We will be awarding two Paul Harris Fellows at Changeover and I congratulate the recipients. At our club we only award PHF's when they have been well and truly earned and this award when given by our club can be worn with the pride of achievement. Our hearts go out to Randal and Susan Dennings and family who have really shown the spirit of determination and family support to each other during Randal's extended illness since Christmas of '98. Even though her time is constantly filled in supporting Randal, Susan has been producing our Intermesh. Thanks Susan. My Directors have given without complaint during this year and I thank them all for their unfailing support and efforts. Finally SUZANNE what can I say. Even though the year has seen the passing of her beloved Mother family illness resulting in heart surgery on two occasions, looking after three of our grandchildren during the week, keeping the house ready for that unexpected visitor that needs to meet with your president as well as caring for my needs she has been the backbone of my efforts to serve this year. I cannot thank her enough for her support and work during this time. I am proud to have been able to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Loganholme for 1998/1999 and I wish your incoming President Darryl and his wife Carole have as much enjoyment from their term as Suzanne as I did during ours. Thank you Yes, it is that time of the year once more. It only seems like yesterday that the year began in earnest and I began the office of Secretary. During the last year the Club has held 11 Board Meetings, one being a joint meeting with the new incoming Board members, two Annual General meetings and the passing of an honored Club member in Don Brough. In his year of Office, President Peter has led the way in encouraging many club projects all of which are reported by the responsible Director. Two of my most memorable meetings during the year have both been at President Peter's home. The first was a Fireside/Poolside Meeting, which predominantly featured the Smoke from Allan Short's Smoke-Out-Australia project, and the other meeting was the incredible successful Melbourne Cup Night. Many thanks for these two events and other behind the scene activities go to Peter's wife Suzanne. Suzanne has been a great support for Peter during his year and we all thank her very much for support and encouragement during the year. To the incoming Secretary, Lorraine, I wish you all the best for the new year. On behalf of the rest of the Board Members, I would like to thank President Peter very much for his encouragement and the enthusiastic manner in which he has led the Club during his year of office. Tony Sidaway Vocational Service Report 1998-99 The highlight of the club's vocational service activities for the year ending 30 July 1999 was its Pride of Workmanship Night. On this occasion - six Pride of Workmanship Awards were given: a special Award for Rotary Service was given jointly to Paul Harris Fellow, Past President Barry Swain and his late wife, Joy; and, a Vocational Excellence Award was given to Dr Nick Stephens. Two vocational visit nights were arranged - one to the Mt Gravatt Bowling Centre and one to Caincross Dry dock. Ian West Club Service Report 1998-99 My year as your Club Service Director has been somewhat disjointed - early in the year I developed symptoms which meant absence from some meetings and which led, in August, to hospitalisation, operation and recuperation all of which kept me away from Rotary for most of the first half of the year. Don Brough, good Rotarian that he was, stood in for me during my absence. It was tragic that he in turn succumbed to an illness from which he did not recover. He has been sadly missed by fellows and partners. Some of our more memorable functions during the year included the Melbourne Cup night at President Peter's in November and the poolside meeting also at Peter's in January. Then of course, there was our Christmas Party when PE Darryl and Carole were generous host and hostess for our dinner meeting around their pool, complete with Santa Claus, who couldn't possibly be let loose on the kids! The children's Christmas Party the week before had a much more decorous Santa and the whole day was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and the adults who attended. We visited Alexandra Clark Park again one Sunday morning in April for a quiet social breakfast, which again was enjoyed by those who attended. In March we played host to the visiting GSE team when Noel and Jim drove them on a sight seeing tour of the coast and hinterland before bringing them to a Partners meeting where they delighted us as guest speakers. Another memorable Partners meeting was the night in April when our guest speakers were the Ambulance Officers who had recently returned from the Solomons where they had instructed on the use of the newly arrived ambulance. Among other guest speakers during the year were Randall Swain who spoke about the current case for longer shopping hours; Paul Jones of the ACCC; David Cocker, a retired Colonel formerly a member of the Army Strategic Command; Linda Kochanski of Relationships Australia and Bruce Robinson who spoke to our last Partners meeting about gold and precious stones - no samples though. We were also visited during the year by ADG Gary Hollindale and DGE Mel Langley who came with Peter Morer, his chairman for the year 2000 Conference which will beheld in Jupiter's Casino. Our attendance during the year has been good and I thank Lorraine for looking after attendance so capably. Thanks also to Al for taking care of the cash and to Jim, as Sergeant, for keeping us amused and in line. We finish the year without an increase in membership numbers despite our best efforts - hopefully in the coming year this will change. Barry Swain This year International Service and Youth Service have been split into two separate committees, which have eased the pressure on this committee considerably. As a result there have been three major projects for the year. The first was the hand-over ceremony celebration of the 'Ambulance to the Solomon Islands project'. This project was the brainchild of PP Allan Short who spent over two years on the negotiations with the Queensland Ambulance Service to get a four wheel drive vehicle suitable for the rough terrain of the 'Islands'. The project also included sending two qualified ambulance men to the Solomon Islands to train the hospital staff in the operation of the equipment in the ambulance. The second was a group study exchange team from Zimbabwe who spent a day with some club members and was given a tour of the Gold Coast and the surrounding area. This was followed by a 'Partners Night' at the Tavern with some videos of elephants and a number of other interesting subjects explained to us by the other members of the 'team'. Altogether a most interesting 'exchange visit'. Our third and ongoing project has been the exchange programme. Currently we have Anita Passaris in the United States of America with the Ardmore Club in Oklahoma. She is having a wonderful time, enjoying her time at the high school she is attending, both with studies and sport. She is also a member of the school band. Currently she is on a three week tour of the southern 'States' including Lafayette, Louisiana, San Antonio and Houston Texas and moving on to Miami. We are also about to send another student to Germany. Her name is Rebecca Kleinschmidt and she comes from Jacob Well. She is very excited about going to Germany where she hopes to meet some of her relatives. Jim Nolan It has been a privilege to work as Community Service Director for the 1998/99 Rotary year. I would like to thank Peter for recognising that Community Services projects often take longer than one year to come to fruition, and with that in mind he asked me to continue as director for the year. The past year has been a particularly busy one for our small club. It is important to emphasise that we are a small club because to achieve what we have in the past year shows a great commitment from all of our members and their families. Following is a list of our hands on projects completed this past year. 1. Fire Alarm project. Fitted 200 alarms in the Logan area
at a small profit to us in order to finance our commitment to Smoke Out
Australia. At the time of writing this report the final allocation of some $2,500 has not been finalised, but here is a list of how our community dollars have been spent this year so far. 1. To WAVSS to purchase books for distribution to doctors
surgeries. I would like to wish the new community services director PP Allan Short every success for the 1999/2000 year and I look forward to working with President Darryl Hood and his incoming board within my new role as president elect. Steve Hendey |
