President's Report 1999-2000

It is with great pleasure and sense of achievement that I present to you my Presidential Report for the Millennium year 1999-2000.

The year's accomplishments and involvement have been one of the best for the club and it's members as was evident at the District Conference of which our club was one of the hosting clubs producing a very successful conference for our District Governor Mel Langley.

The club obtained some accolades in the form of: -
" Best Conference attendance
" Best Attendance for our group
" One of four clubs from the whole district nominated for the most efficient club

I thought that it was appropriate that I mention our club's activities over the past year but on beginning to quantify the content it became too lengthy so not to duplicate with the Directors Report, I hope that the full content is being covered adequately by them.

We have members serving on district committees and making a big impact for the Rotary movement. My desire for the year was a simple wish for members to enjoy themselves totally and on achieving that all the additional Rotary involvement would follow and to this end I am pleased in the results achieved.

Overall we had great guest speakers on a wide variety of subjects, inducted four new members with more in the wings, Rebecca Kleinschmidt and Anita Passaris our exchange students overseas, a range of vocational and educational club visits all around Brisbane and our club in a good financial position.

My major fund raising for the year was for the Logan Public Hospital Adolescent Mental Health Unit to be opened in the week 5 July, 2000.

I chose the AMHU because Australian Rotary is to embark on the mental health issues through the ARHRF and I believe that this is a very poorly funded part of the Public Health System.

I was fortunate to raise the sum of $13,500 from donations made by clients and suppliers of my company.

A list of the financial support was given to the following during the year and tonight:

Logan Hospital Adolescent Mental Health Unit $13,500.
Canteen $1,500. (Partners)
Gemma Rice Foundation (East African Fund Inc) $500.
District ARHRF & Foundation $1,500.
Whitecross Inc (Kingston College) $3,000. ($1,600 Partners)
Canterbury College $250.
SPSS $250.
Salvation Army $3,000.
Whitecross Inc (Foundation funding for an
Additional school) $2,200.

All I can say now is thank you to the Board Members and Members who supported me during the year and did so without any coercion to make things run so successfully.

In conclusion I have to say how great it was to have the support of my wife Carole for her inspiration, interest and involvement in being a big part of my year in Rotary for the Millennium Year 1999-2000.

The club is now in the secure hands of Stephen Hendey and I wish him all the success and fulfillment in the forthcoming year.

Yours in Rotary
Darryl Hood

Rotaryanne's Report

What a year - forget the ill health, work overload and moving house - standing beside Darryl and support his presidential commitments has made this year very special for me. I have many people to thank for their support - Sue Roseby, Pat Nolan, Joan Ambler, the Nelsons, Narelle Short, Sue Dennings and especially Marie McGavin (my mighty mouse).

This year the Partners successfully raised $3,107.00 through a series of multi draw raffles of which $1500 went to Canteen - Teenagers with Cancer and $1600 to Whitecross an organization set up to help Logan teenagers with behaviour needs. We were also busy in other areas - competing a patch representing our Club for the District Quilt displayed at the Conference in March. An enjoyable night was had by all who attended the evening with the Qld Philharmonic Orchestra, a Marsden family were very grateful for our Xmas Hamper and recently 2 Literacy Kits for 20 children was sent to the Solomon Islands with the help of Pat and Joan and our Company's stationary suppliers.

Because the year has been so hectic, I regret the lack of partner fellowship outside normal Club business - maybe Denise may wish to address this in her year. Denise, I congratulate you tonight and wish you lots of exciting and fun times during your year. You have my support in reaching your goals and I know you are in for a very rewarding Rotary year ahead.

Take care everyone
Carole Hood (Mrs Pres)

Secretary's Report

The year has flown by and being my first full year as a member of Rotary I have found the position of Secretary to be a big learning curve and a very rewarding job. I can report that all correspondence that has been received has been dealt with appropriately, all forms that needed to be completed, have, all Meeting Minutes transcribed. And we have our ABN number.

We have welcomed as new members, Les McGavin, David Cocker, Kevin King and Judy Arundell, and this increase in membership is heartening, but we must continue to encourage good people to join Rotary.

As far as activities of the Club, other Board members reports will cover their areas of responsibility with more knowledge than I, so I will leave it to them to do so. We are not a large club in numbers and I would like to offer my personal thanks to those members who have worked, particularly those who have worked above and beyond the call of duty, to make this last year a very successful one both in club activities and in Fund raising. My thanks also go to President Darryl and all the Directors and Committee members who have been very patient and helpful to me over the year. I would also like to extend my admiration to Carole for the hard work she did in organizing the raffle, Marie for her contribution towards obtaining the prizes, and to all the other people who helped with the raffle for the exceptional job they did as well as those who contributed to the Rotary patchwork wall hanging.

This last year has been another good year for Loganholme Rotary Club and Darryl has headed the Club in an extremely able manner. He has been a delight to work with.

I will be continuing in the role of Secretary for the next Rotary year and I look forward to working with Stephen who will also be a credit to the Club and Rotary in the role of President.

Lorraine Howson.

Treasurer's Report

Our accounts will be audited following the end of the financial year and these will be presented to our annual general meeting for acceptance. In the mean time, however, you may be interested in some of the details taken from our yearly accounts.

In our club account our receipts for the year have been over $27,500 and in the community account over $21,500. Our members' subscriptions for the year have been $4100 and we have paid dues to RI District 9630 and Rotary Down Under of $3462. Members have paid $16,275for meals but the Club in turn has paid $17,430 for catering. Club purchases for the year have accounted for $3530 and we have paid $54 to the Government for cheques we have written.

Our fund raising over the year has been exceptional - our Rotaryannes raised over $3000 while President Darryl raised approximately $13,500 for the Logan Hospital Mental Health Unit. Additionally to this our ongoing bus shelter programme gave us $3200 and project such as the smoke alarm programme, bowelscan and the raffle, which we run at district conference, added a further $4375 gross less associated expenses to our community service account.

This has enabled us to make the donations, which will be presented tonight, together with donations, which have been made during the year to Canteen ($1500 from the Rotaryannes) and East Africa Fund inc ($500) - altogether a most successful financial year.

Barry Swain.

Youth Service Report 1999-2000

1999/2000 has been a year of consolidation for the Youth Services Committee.

No new projects or activities have been undertaken, although we have looked to lay the foundations for some.

The Club has continued to support RYLA and RYPEN by seeking out and sponsoring worthy candidates to these Rotary initiatives. We have also supported the Summer Science School with candidates, although we have not been successful in having a nomination accepted into the program as yet.

The Youth Services Committee has looked to the school system as one of the areas where we can be of greatest assistance.

The development of an Interact Club in one of our local high schools is still on the agenda, and to this extent, we have commenced a strategic alliance with Shailer Park High School. To this extent we have received an invitation from the school to be a part of the group working on its "Vision of Excellence". Shailer Park principal John Corbett is a strong supporter of Rotary and we thank him for this support.

During the year we have received requests for assistance from Shailer Park State School and Canterbury College Music programs, and we are pleased to be able to provide financial support for them at this time.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the Club members for the overall support that youth activities have received in the time that I have been Youth Services Director. Whilst not being Youth Services initiatives, the Logan Hospital Adolescent Mental Health Unit and the Kingston College Achievement Program are prime examples of Community youth activities that the Club has embraced.

I am confident that the incoming Committee will continue this fine work.

David Gardner

International and Youth Service Report 1999-2000

There have been a number of facets to International Service this year, the major feature being the Club's continuing involvement in the Youth Exchange Programme.

Anita Passaris returned to Australia from her year abroad in Ardmore, USA on 8 January, 2000 and just eight days later we were back at the airport farewelling Rebecca Kleinschmidt who is currently enjoying her year in the north of Germany.

Prior to Rebecca's departure we managed to get both her and Anita together to speak to the Club.

In February we celebrated World Understanding Month by holding the International Night at the Kim Khanh Restaurant at Darra. Those who were able to attend thoroughly enjoyed the good food, good wine and good company and funds raised from the function were ultimately applied towards Gemma Rice's fine programme in East Africa about which we heard at the District Conference.

We also this year had a regular programme of International Toasts to overseas Clubs based on the connection of a Club's town with an historical event occurring on that day, sometimes centuries earlier.

Letters enclosing our Club's banner were forwarded to these Clubs telling them something about ourselves, noting the historical event and extending the hand of Rotary fellowship. Letters were sent to many countries including England, Scotland, Belgium, Norway, Italy, Poland and South Africa and a number of replies were received.

On at least one occasion those overseas members were totally unaware of the historical event!

During the year Club members also assisted Donations in Kind by working on roster at Tennyson, and in collecting used stamps we assisted RAWCS in its project funding for Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Many thanks to my committee members David Roseby, Jim Nolan, Graeme Bosanquet and Judy Arundell with special thanks to Jim who as Exchange Student Counsellor gave generously of his time in attending various functions with Anita and Rebecca including briefing and debriefing sessions.

All the very best to Allan and his team for International Service this coming year.

Chris Monahan

Community Service Report 1999-2000

The Community Service activities for the year commenced with the completion of construction of the shelter at Loganlea High School. Work that was much appreciated by the school.

At the end of July we held our official launch for the Smoke Out Australia project, which saw the installation of 96 smoke alarms into the homes of our senior citizens.

The Club has indicated its desire to continue to act as area coordinator for the Qld Cancer Fund Doorknock Appeal on 10 October. Thanks to David and Kim Gardner for the use of their home as a base for the day.

The money for our royalties on the bus shelters continued to assist the balance of the account. One of the shelters did need some repairs which Ray Carter attended to - thanks Ray.

One area that we endeavoured to include in the projects for the year was the nomination of a person from CANTEEN for a 'Shine on Award'. 'Shine on Awards' are presented to people for the commendable community service in spite of their disabilities. I approached CANTEEN for a nomination but was both disappointed that a nomination was not forth coming and delighted because the potential candidates did not believe they had a significant disability.

This year we sold 64 Christmas cakes and 64 puddings, which raised $258.10. This money will be donated to ARHRF.

Clean up Australia in March was again conducted by members of the Club at Alexander Clarke Park.

John Brisco put on a brave face as he shaved his head for a cure - the Club response to this was a $200 donation to leukemia.

Our final event for the year was to participate in the Rotary Bowelscan scheme. It is 11 years since the Club last undertook the sale of bowel cancer screening kits to the public. A staff was established at the Hyperdome for three days in May with the assistance of Soroptimist International Beenleigh Inc, Rotary Club of Logan Sunrise and Linda MacKay from White Lady Funerals. Three hundred kits were sold and a lot of fellowship enjoyed.

Thank you very much to my committee for your support and all the best to David Cocker as he commences his first appointment at Director.
