The week before last saw the arrival of a sample wheelchair which various members took the opportunity to test drive. Maybe not as aesthetically pleasing as we are probably used to but definitely built to take the knocks. Thanks to Steve Hendey, Peter Jones and Marie Grant for taking the trouble to go down to the coast and have discussions with the manufacturers, discuss our participation and associated costs, and for bringing back the sample chair(s). Thanks as well to Marie who very ably stepped in to the guest speakers spot to explain the events surrounding the acquiring and discussions around the chair.

Thanks for a heartfelt address from David Khoury during the Job Talk segement last week. I will include extracts from the text regarding the Haifa suicide bombing in the next newsletter as I am running out of time for this week but in the meantime David, the Club extends its sympathy to you and yours in respect of your friend who came from your Israeli home town of Fassouta.

A very constructive Club Assembly was held last week with several suggestions coming out of discussions among the various avenues of service.

New Generations - Stephen Hendey reported that Rotary International are running a Kid’s Poster Competition and that we were encouraging all the local schools to submit entries. There will be the usual Rypen week-end camp next March and the Ryler camp as usual. The Wheelchair project has received very positive support from all the schools approached with at least two schools making a definite commitment.

Vocational – Next Monday is the big night for Vocational. All the organistion for the Awards is well in hand and it should be an excellent event. This will be a partners night and we are expecting about 70 people to attend.

Community – Marie’s community committee had discussions on the numerous events coming up and everything is on track. Marie leaves for Africa on the 23rd October and returns in the last week of November. Unfortunately she’ll miss the Melbourne Cup Night. We must have numbers for Melbourne Cup Night by 20th for catering purposes and there must be a minimum of 30 people. Numbers are also required for those who are attending the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” function so logistics can be sorted out before Marie goes away as there will not be time after she returns.

Only six days to go for The Topless Car Run (Sunday, 19th October). I hope you are all going to support this event. It will be one of the major fund faising events for the Club. Don’t forget items for the auction to be held after the fun is completed. Participants need to be at Logan Food Fair Car Park (at Coco’s on the service road round from Fitzy’s by 8.15 a.m. for a 9.00 a.m. start – please come early…..

International - See further on for a re-print of Anna Kleinschmidt’s contribution the the Youth Exchange Magazine.

Club - As we have a couple of members on extended leave and David Cocker has resigned we need to make an effort to increase the membership this year. In a discussion instigated by Randal, who had some very interesting statistics regarding membership attraction and retention, it was agreed that we should have at least every 2 months a good guest speaker and invitations by each and every club member for at least one prospective member to be invited along to these meetings
I will be liaising with David Gardner to set up a regular date regarding these types of meetings. Keep your eyes and ears open and even if people are not able to join our club there is sure to be a club in the area who would love to accommodate them.

Cheers for this week,
President Lorraine

SWITZERLAND

Hello Everybody!

Well I have officially started my summer holidays in Switzerland, and we have had wonderful weather. It got up to about 35 degrees these holidays, the best summer Switzerland has had for 100 years in fact, and my host parents keep telling me that if the weather stays good, there might be a possibility for a white Christmas. The first week of the holidays was pretty stressful as I took up my new hobby of swimming. I swan 16km over 4 days! So I was really looking forward to taking a break. Our family went to Germany the second week of the holidays , which was quite peaceful. We toured the city, and made a rather interesting trip to a cave that was 1000’s of years old. In the 3rd week of the holidays we went to Austria. It was excellent, we did a huge hike that saw us going 600m high up a mountain, the scenery from up on top was breathtaking, but my feet are still paying for it. I had about 6 huge blisters. I was rather disappointed that I missed Switzerland Day but I am still having fun.

Well until later
Anna.
