POST OFFICE BOX  3034,LOGANHOLME.   QLD.   4129  QUEENSLAND      AUSTRALIA

Congratulations to Peter Jones for an excellent Pride of Workmanship Night last Monday. Peter’s organisation was superb; everything went like clockwork. These events go from strength to strength, and I’m sure that the business community in Logan (who know about this event) are grateful for the opportunity to be able to acknowledge in public those of their employees who are deserving of special accolades.

I must make special mention of Desley and Nigel Johnson in respect of the Topless Car Run and to Noel and Graeme who put so much effort into the logistics of running such an event. Nigel has been doing this event on his own for the last several years and definitely deserves is Vocational Excellence Award for his efforts, not to forget to mention Desley who has worked beside him every stop of the way. The event raised around $16,000 dollars of which part of our contribution to the ASAP Programme at Kingston College will be paid with the rest of the funds going to the Wesley Hospital for research into breast cancer and heart disease; very worthy recipients.

Not to forget the contribution to the evening made by Lucky Grills who is a very, very funny man. We were delighted that he could come and also bring his lovely wife. We didn’t invite lucky with the intention that he entertain us but we are very grateful that he did. It’s a shame that most of you members probably didn’t get an opportunity to talk with Maria Grills. Hopefully she’ll come along to a few more of our functions and you’ll get the opportunity then.

Thank’s to the Directors who described what sort of contribution is being made by various avenues of service within Rotary and what a worthwhile organisation Rotary is. Thanks to those people who have put in the effort for this night both before, during and after the function; Peter, Graeme, Allan, Judy, David Khoury, Noel, Randal, the staff at Fitzy’s, Darren and Barry, Stephen and Denise,

There were some excellent addresses by both nominators and awardees and the calibre of the awardees gives us all hope for the future of Australia. Our congratulations to to the Awardees but also to the employers who took the time and the thought to recognise the contribution of their staff.

As Randal said, “Ä GOOD BOSS IS SOMEONE WHO GETS YOU TO DO WHAT YOU MAY NOT WANT TO DO SO YOU CAN BE EVERYTHING YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED YOU COULD BE”- Robyn Moore

Before closing I would like to acknowledge the passionate address given to us last Monday week by Tiga Bayles (and the introduction by Russell Close) in respect of the relationship between aboriginal Australians and white Australians, and the desperate need for more understanding of Aboriginal culture in order to try to help them solve of their most pressing problems in terms of health and education.
Next week is Melbourne Cup Night. We need to have at least 30 people attending, and the more the merrier. The venue is at Peter Nelson’s home at 29 Lobelia Street, Daisy Hill (off Daisy Hill Road), 6.30 for 7.00 start.

Have a Great Week.
President Lorraine

DUTY ROSTER MONDAY, 27th OCTOBER, 2003

DUTY OFFICER…..Steven JOHNSON CHAIRMAN…. Darren BLACK JOB TALK…….Chris MONAHAN

Following is an excerpt from some internet information in respect of David Khoury’s talk to us a couple of weeks ago (see Intermesh from the week before last):

A woman suicide bomber blew herself up in a Haifa restaurant. 29 year old Hanadi Jaradat, a trainee lawyer from the West Bank city of Jenin. (When I was 7 – 9 years old I used to go with my Mum. She was a school teacher teaching them to read). 19 victims died of Haifa suicide bombing. 60 people were wounded in the attack. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. Including three children, among the victims were three generations of the Zer-Aviv family from Kibbutz Yagur, 4 members of the Almog family from Haifa, and local television reported Mark Biani and his wife, Naomi.

Inradat’s brother Salah and a cousin, both Islamic Jihad militants, were killed in June by IDF troops. This is the 4th time that Palestinian terrorists have dispatched a female suicide bomber into Israel.

The general manager of Maccabi Haifa soccer team, Itamar Chizik, technical manager, Arieh Burstein and team coach, Ronni Levi, were in the restaurant at the time of the blast. Team Captain, Arik Henado said, adding that the three were lightly wounded. “We were sitting with our sides towards the door of the restaurant. We didn’t see who came in”, said Chizik. “We felt an explosion and then everyone around us was either wounded or dead.

Two of the victims were residents of Fassouta, a Christian village in the Upper Galilee (David’s home town in Israel). Hana Francis, 40, had worked as a waiter at the Maxim restaurant for about 10 years. Francis had only recently become engaged. Sharbal Matar, 23, was Hana’s cousin and the nephew of the restaurant’s owners. He had been working at the restaurant for five years.

CENTURION CLUB

Every year the Rotary Foundation touches the lives of millions of people, bringing hope where there is despair, sight where there is blindness, shelter where there is homelessness, nourishmen t where there is hunger, literacy where previously no schooling existed, and providing a hope for a Polio-free world.

While Rotarians serve the Rotary Foundation in many ways, the Centurion Club recognises individuals who commit themselves to a personal contribution of at least AU$100 annually t the Rotary Foundation. The real advantage comes when such people give the AU$100 via the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust – a gain tax deductibility! Allocation of moneys contributed to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust is restricted in accordance with the Australian Taxation Laws.

Rotarians seeking to join the Centurion Club complete a form committing themselves to a contribution of $100 per year for as long as they are able. Once they have made their first contribution they will receive a distinctive lapel pen and a certificate of recognition.

Clubs which attain the distinction of having every member become a Centurion will be suitably recognised as a Centurion Club.

Centurions are encouraged to wear their lapel pin with pride to show they believe in and support the Rotary Foundation – our Foundation for Peace.
