Thanks very much to David Gardner for coming up with the Q & A activity in lieu of a guest speaker on Monday. I’m sure we all learnt a lot more about the history of rotary and had a good time as well. Congratulations to Ian West for answering the most questions correctly. Commiserations to those of us who obviously don’t know as much as we should about the origins of Rotary.

I have had an email from John Walker regarding the ABC TV and radio reports on the Youth Exchange programme in respect of sexual harassment claims. RI have sanctioned PDG John Wakefield to be spokesperson in this matter as he is the International Youth Exchange Chairman. Any matters relating to this should be directed to him email – jwakers@bigpond.com.

I again mention our Vocational Award Night to be held on 20th October, 2003. How about us all giving Business Owners and Managers a nudge?, and making this year our biggest year yet. The worst they can do is say “No”. See Peter Jones for application forms or give him the name of anyone you know who may participate and he will see they receive the form.

D-I-K are looking for people to help there on Thursday mornings sorting and packing books. Again, this is an extremely worthwhile activity and if anyone feels they can spare some time please don’t hesitate. Some of the partners may be interested in helping here.

As I mentioned last week, I attended an information meeting regarding the ACAP Programme and said I would report on this at a later date (I’m waiting for some info to come in respect of previous questions we have asked). Allan James will be coming along as guest speaker on 15th September with a presentation on this subject so I will leave it to the expert to answer any questions you may have.

We have a Sons and Daughters and grandchildren night on 8th September and this should be very entertaining. Please don’t forget to organise your family to come.

FULFILLING OUR PROMISE: ERADICATE POLIO!!

“The districts in Australia set a goal of US$1.6 Million; RI set us a goal of US$2.2 Million. As of 31st May, 2003 we were at US$1.95 Million. At least another US$150,000 has been received since the convention bringing our total to US$2.1 million with more to come. When we add the matching contribution from the Australian Government our total contribution to date is in the order of $US4.2 million.

Rotary’s worldwide goal was US$80 Million. At the Convention it was announced that we had collected US$56 Million and there were further commitments of US$32 million making a total of US$88 million.

My heartfelt thanks goes to my Australian Polio Eradication Fundraising Committee for all their hard work.

Ken Collins, Chairman, Australian Polio Eradication Fundraising Committee”
“Our District’s Effort:

Top Club in the district is the ROTARY CLUB OF CLEVELAND which has given US$8164 during 2002-2003. In Second Place (and first on a per capita basis) is the ROTARY CLUB OF FOREST LAKE with US$6612. Without wishing to detract from the efforts of other Clubs this is a marvellous effort by a small club.

Other clubs which have contributed in excess of US$4500 are, TOOWOOMBA, WYNNUM & MANLY, TOOWOOMBA EAST and IPSWICH NORTH.

PDG Pat Galligan, District Chairman, Polio Eradication Campaign.”

DON’T FORGET – THE BACKYARD BLITZ TEAM PAID A VISIT TO THE CHILDREN FIRST FOUNDATION, MOIRA KELLY OPEN DOOR ROTARY FARM AT KILMORE, VICTORIA ALONG WITH A TEAM OF ROTARIANS FROM A NUMBER OF CLUBS IN THE AREA.

TREMENDOUS PUBLICITY FOR ROTARY IS EXPECTED WHEN THE SHOW IS AIRED.

PLEASE WATCH ON CHANNEL 9, SUNDAY 24TH AUGUST AT 6.30 P.M. – A ONE HOUR SPECIAL SHOW

last meeting’s guest speaker, Graeme Smith, for his excellent presentation on the aims and importance of the GSE Team exchange programme . We are avid supporters of this programme and know how beneficial it is to be able to interact with people from other countries in a one-to-one environment. Commiserations go to Marie on her being pipped at the post by the gentleman from Chinchilla in her quest to become the GSE Team Leader for next year. Maybe next time, Marie. You would have been a very worthy ambassador for Australia and Australian Rotary and an excellent Team Leader.

Many thanks to those of you who have contributed articles to this week’s Intermesh. It sure takes a lot of pressure off me. If any member would like to submit something please don’t be backward in coming forward.

Please take special note of our Vocational Award Night to be held on 20th October, 2003. It is all too rare that people get the accolades they deserve for a job well done and it probably doesn’t occur to a lot of employers in this busy day and age to nominate their good people for an award unless they are given a nudge. Pride in one’s work is re-inforced when it is noticed and acknowledged. How about us all giving Business Owners and Managers a nudge?, and making this year our biggest year yet. See Peter Jones for application forms or give him the name of anyone you know who may participate and he will see they receive the form.

If you have a look at the end of this missive you will see a note from Don Hay looking for a Bbq to replace the unsafe one they have been given for the workers at District Headquarters. If you are at all able to help please don’t hesitate. The people who are puting in all their spare time continuing with the refurbishment of the building are also looking for help on the week-ends. Allan Short puts in an inordinate amount of time and if anyone else feels they can donate an hour it two occasionally at the weekends I’m sure it would be extremely appreciated.

D-I-K are looking for people to help there on Thursday mornings. Again, this is an extremely worthwhile activity and if anyone feels they can spare some time please don’t hesitate. Some of the partners may be interested in helping here.

To all Directors, don’t forget our Board Meeting on Monday night and don’t forget the DG’s visit the following Monday (25th). This will be 6.30 p.m. for 7.00 p.m. and is a Partners Night.

From the Prezzie’s Desk:

I believe there was an excellent turn-out for the GSE presentation at the Green Club by the Rotary Club of South Brisbane. I hope you all enjoyed the night and found the presentation interesting. I believe the point was made that perhaps the GSE Team members were kept too busy and needed a little more time out. I’m sure that’s also the feeling of all the host families who accommodate teams members here in Australia. Maybe the District Committee should keep this in mind when organising future programmes.
It would really be appreciated if each of the Directors could jot a few notes down each meeting and give them to me so they can be included in this weekly missive.
Don’t forget, no meeting next week due to public holiday for the Ekka. The following week (18/8/03) there will be a Board Meeting held after the regular meeting.
There are still a few members who have not given David their personal comments to go with their photographs on the web site. Please attend to this ASAP.
Dues are due and are $200 for 12 months.
Email response to David Gardner from Marie Williams from Maine USA, one of our RI Convention Hostee’s – “Bruce and I arrived home at 2AM on June 30th. We had a fantastic time! We enjoyed our time with the Loganholme Rotary Club. From the pictures you put on the website, it shows we were having a great time. The picture Bruce took of the Club came out great. As soon as I can get my son to show me how to attach it to an email I will forward it to you.
We are so glad you were our hosts for the evening. You have a great Club and you definitely have FUN – my kind of people

Thanks again for a great evening.

I went along last week thinking that there would be very little to do early in the night and that we would be able to have assembly, discussion re same and still finish by 8.00 p.m.     Wrong!!    David’s job talk was very interesting and informative and he only touched the surface of worker’s compensation.  I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from him. Thanks very much David and I apologise for making you eat cold soup.

Congratulations to David Roseby for selecting the Ace when he won the raffle last Monday.  It’s surprising it lasted as long as it did.

Club Assembly was very constructive even though the meeting ran well over time.  Following are the various Committee’s reports and their initial intentions arising from Assembly are listed.   If everything goes to plan we will have a very enjoyable constructive year.

DIRECTOR – DAVID ROSEBY

The practice of proposing a toast to other Rotary Clubs is to continue and these Clubs will be informed by email that we have toasted them.

D.I.K. is to be supported again this term.

An International Dinner  is to be organised for 23rd February next year with guest speakers from the ranks of the Peace Scholars.

Darryl Hood advised that our Exchange Student, Rebecca Klienschmidt has not been contactable.  Her Parents have not heard from her either  although it is assumed that there is nothing apart from a low level of importance placed on this activity by Rebecca.   To be followed up with District.

Jim Nolan brought up the point that we follow up on the concept of external “Friends of Rotary”  with a view to encouraging people in the community to get involved in Rotary activities without having to become a Rotarian with all that entails.  Jim’s brother who is with Jimboomba Club should be invited back to speak on how this works within his club.

DIRECTOR – STEPHEN HENDEY

As well as fulfilling our usual obligations with youth (RYLA, Siemens Science School, etc)  New Generations would like to re-visit the mock interviews for Chisholm College and perhaps to conduct some competitions within schools – perhaps handwriting and colouring on the theme of the Four Way Test.

DIRECTOR – Peter Jones (subbed for by Graeme Bosanquet)

The main activity for Vocational this year will again be the Vocation Awards Night held in October.  We have a reputation within District that we do this right and we need to make it bigger and better.  Everyone in the Club should be approaching employers with a view to ensuring that deserved people in the area receive an award,

Vocational visits will also be part of the Vocational agenda.

         DIRECTOR – Chris Monahan

Comment was made on our excellent web site and it was pointed out that there are still a view members who have not given David their personal comments to go with their photographs.    Please attend to this ASAP.

Allan Short would like to update our “What is Rotary” Brochure.

Chris Monahan would like to see the re-institution of Sons and Daughters nights and Fireside Meetings to be held with 4 or so people at member’s homes.

Dues are due by 30th July, 2003 and are $200 for 12 months.

DIRECTOR – MARIE GRANT

Some of the projects under discussion are as follows:

Wheelchairs to be assembled by schools   -   Bowls (or similar) day  -  Bowel Scan     -   Clean up Australia Day    -    Topless Car Run    -   ETC.

AS EACH OF THESE ACTIVITIES WILL REQUIRE SOME INTENSIVE DISCUSSION AND PLANNING AND A FURTHER OFF-SITE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT PETER NELSON’S ON WEDNESDAY COMMENCING AT 7.00 P.M.

MARIE HAS MADE THE FINAL 2 FOR INTERVIEW FOR THE 2004 GSE TEAM.  A WONDERFUL EFFORT MARIE AND OUR HEARTFELT GOOD LUCK WISHES TO WITH YOU FOR THE FINAL INTERVIEW.

From the President ( Change Over 2003 )

It was especially heart-warming to see the visitors from District and Beenleigh come and join us at change-over and great to have our newest member inducted. Noel has worked very hard over the last year and he and Joan are probably looking forward to getting away on LSL sooner rather than later. He won't be with us on Monday but will be at the next week's meeting (unless something unforeseen happens).

Warm Welcome to Steven Johnson and I hope he and his family enjoys and gets as much satisfaction out of Rotary as we all do.

With Change-over completed, Awards given, thank-you's made, funds disbursed (and weren't Noels choices of recipients excellent), etc. it is now time to get on with the business of Rotary. To that end Monday night will be dedicated to Club Assembly. I am including the list of Committee's and the names of the members of each committee, so come along prepared to put in your 10c worth. If you have any ideas you would like to see put in place Monday is the time to bring them up.

For Board members we will attempt to make our monthly Board Meeting on the third Monday of each month. This will give the Treasurer time to get his report together. Should the third Monday in any month fall on a public holiday we will make the meeting a week later.

It would be appreciated if Board Members could write out their weekly report (just a paragraph will do) and with David Khoury's expertise we will try to get our weekly newsletter on the web site.
